Premiere festival of 200 performances by over 40 different artist/groups--theater, dance, comedy, circus, magic, burlesque--July 13-22.
Hi, my name is Dixie FunLee Shulman, and I’m the director of the brand new Santa Cruz Fringe Festival. I moved to Santa Cruz almost 2 years ago from New York City. My family traveled both coasts, Canada too, and after our explorations we chose Santa Cruz to be our new home. This past summer is when I first got the idea that a Fringe festival could work in Santa Cruz. I’ve had the pleasure of performing in a few Fringes, including the granddaddy Edinburgh Fringe, and I saw how Santa Cruz embodies all the elements needed to host a successful Fringe Festival. We have a disproportionate number of artists here for the population size, and this warm, open community loves its arts. And just as I’d hoped, about a third of the premiere Santa Cruz Fringe Festival artists are from Santa Cruz County. Some of these performers are established and well-seasoned, others are emerging or putting together their first full-length show. At the same time, I knew that a Santa Cruz Fringe would attract high quality artists from around the state and country too. These artists get to tour their work, make some money, and have a fantastic time enjoying all that Santa Cruz has to offer. And for us locals, this new festival means we can see over 40 different shows during the 10-day festival. Don’t worry, each show happens multiple times so you won’t miss a thing.
So the Fringe artists are booked, the performance schedule is set, the website is being built…and now we need your help! While the artists do pay to participate in the Festival, the artist fees fall far short of fulfilling the entire budget. And the Festival needs to be completely financed before it even begins as the artists will receive 70% of their box office. The remainder of the ticket sales is split with 5% going to city taxes, 10% to the venues, and 15% to next year’s Fringe.
We are gathering business sponsors for the Festival, but we also need help from friends and art supporters like you. Please help make my Fringe dream come true! Every day I run into someone who thanks me for starting this exciting festival. The energy is building for a super fun and highly successful festival that Santa Cruz and the entire Central Coast, maybe even the Bay Area, will look forward to for many years to come. This is your chance to be a part of the premiere Santa Cruz Fringe Festival, so we hope you’ll join us! Plus we have some pretty fun gifts for our donors. Check out the Fringe line-up! Performances will take place at The 418 Project, Center Stage, Motion at the Mill, the Tannery World Dance and Cultural Center, the auditorium at Louden Nelson, the Museum of Art and History, and a couple extra BYOV locations (bring your own venue.)
Thank you for your help in the manifestation of this new fantastic Festival!
