The first 40
Hey all,
At the outset, I'd like to say I would do this update as a video, except for the fact I'm sitting in a bustling italian cafe in San Diego filled with a cacophony of grinding coffee, frothing milk, caffeinated conversations of "how have you been?" and "we shouldn't wait so long", dogs barking perhaps similar sentiments, change being broken in the register, dishes clanking together as they are stacked 30 high and just shy of the tipping point, all underlined and brought together by the low hum of the coffee roaster caramelizing beans behind me. It's nice atmosphere, but not for a video where subtitles are not an option. So a written post will have to do.
What is this post about? Well, I'm not sure really. Well that's not good you're thinking. If the writer doesn't know where he is going, where are we to end up? Well, therein lies some excitement, suspense, and mystery I suppose. Similar to this campaign...ah yes, there it is...bringing it into focus. Planned that way? No, but there are some things in life you have to just throw out there, and hope that it works out the way people say it might. In the words of Stoppard, "I don't know, it's a mystery."
For those that have the (dis)pleasure of knowing me, they were very surprised that I decided to try out this platform. There have been many questions. I'm sure there are a ton more. So over the course of this next week I will try and answer as many of them as possible, hopefully in the format of video. But for now, let me say a huge thank you to the first 40. It really does mean so much to me to have that support. Regardless of the level of participation, this is a journey for all of us, and that sense of community is what I find to be fun about doing a project this way. There is a tremendous amount of goodwill at the outset, which is what every film requires to be successful. There is only so much preparation you can do. At a certain point you have to step out there and do it. Put the ball in the back of the net. Emote your ass off and sway the audience. Capture that small, nuanced behavior that the actor didn't even know they were giving you. Organize and focus the story around lynch pin moments that catapult the story over the top. That is where the magic lies in this medium. That is what draws us to the movie theater. And personally, that is why I decided years ago to make it my life.
Thanks for being a part. Lets do this thing.
