Ever dreamed of leaving it all behind? A documentary tale of two sisters and a bakery dream.
UPDATE: Yes, we have met our goal and are grateful for all of the support. But, we can always use more. With the money pledged so far we will be able to finish the filming. We'll need more in September when we start post production, which can be very expensive, as well as for marketing and distribution. So, if you were contemplating a donation, don't let the fact we've reached our goal stop you. Your help will just make the film better!!
THE FILM
In this documentary, Southerner Jackie Johnson chases her childhood dream of owning a bakery all the way to Homer, Alaska. Jackie's sister and mother join her, making the business - and her dream - a family affair.
After years of living apart, can the three women come together for this Alaska-sized quest? With your help we can tell their inspirational story.
THE STORY
I'll never forget the day my mother called to say "You won't BELIEVE the crazy thing that Jackie is doing."
Jackie, her good friend, had quit her well-paid job helping run an assisted living center to open a bakery. It was something she'd always dreamed of doing.
The catch? The bakery was going to be in Homer, Alaska.
Then Jackie's sister, Kathy, and mother, Doris, decided to join in the adventure too. The sisters had not been close for years, and now they would have to learn to run a bakery together.
Seeing the three women throw their stable lives aside to pursue this fantasy has changed my life. I know it will inspire others too.
YOUR HELP
I've
completed the first half of filming. I traveled with the sisters as
they started the long drive from Oklahoma to Alaska in an RV packed with
baking supplies. I filmed them during the first month of the
season as they faced challenges getting started.
Now I need to return to Alaska to film their busiest time of the year, July 4th weekend, to document how the dream and team hold up under pressure.
I
also need to be there in September as they board up at the end of the
season, saying goodbye to their bakery home for the long winter months.
And
before all that, I am heading to Oklahoma for crucial documentary bread and butter: interviews with Jackie,
Kathy and their mother Doris, and scenic shots of Oklahoma City for the
opening credits.
And by the way, Kickstarter is an ALL or NOTHING fundraising platform. If I reach my goal, I get the funds to go towards the project. If I don't reach my goal of $3,000, no one is charged and I get nothing. So the stakes here are high. If you've never donated through Kickstarter before, it's actually really fast and simple.
Where's the money going?
The
$3,000 will enable me to travel to Alaska in July and September, and
help cover the costs I’ve already incurred to travel next month to
Oklahoma.
If
Jackie lets me again, I'll be sleeping on the bakery floor and eating
their yummy leftovers to save money so that all of the funds can go
directly to the film.
Where is the money NOT going?
To me, not a cent.
I've
spent nearly $2,000 of my savings on this already and don't regret it.
If I didn't believe in this film and in its message of second chances
and adventure, I wouldn't have put my own money in and I wouldn't be
asking you to either.
Any
additional funds will be used for post-production, graphics, music,
creating DVDs, etc. I hope you will become a supporter and participant
in bringing this film to a wider audience. Thank you!
