A WW II P-40 fighter was recently discovered in the Sahara Desert. I would like to visit the site and document it before it disappears.
I am an American/Canadian living in Dubai, UAE and the Middle East since 2006. I have my own consulting company here which helps foreign companies enter into the Middle East and North African markets.
Recently I heard about a WWII P40 that was found in the Sahara Desert in Egypt by an oil exploration team. Due to its location (strategic resource zone) recovery will be very difficult if not impossible and the plane is already being vandalized and stripped of parts by souvenir hunters and local Egyptians.
What I would like to do is fly from Dubai to Egypt, visit the site and document it properly before the aircraft is sold for scrap or carved up by visitors. I grew up in a military family on an airbase and have been around airplanes all my life - my father was an airframe engineer for Boeing, Learjet and most recently Gulfstream.
However, because this is a plane that was lost in combat I am more interested to find out what happened to the pilot than anything else and would like to do as much research on the site as I can (collecting serial numbers primarily) and then working with Vintage Wings of Canada to research in the various government archives. http://www.vintagewings.ca/VintageNews/Stories/tabid/116/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/357/language/en-CA/Original-Kittyhawk-HS-B-Discovered.aspx
From there I will publish an article and lay the groundwork for a recovery of the airframe which is my long term goal (and will require much more than 9K!). My background in this type of work is that in addition to giving my retired dad something to work on.
