Join us to discover why the gods have shipped Helen of Troy, the most notorious Starlette in history, to a three star hotel in Egypt.
"Oh, don't kid yourself, honey. You'll die. Your story will go on and on. But it'll have precious little to do with you. Not that it ever did. I mean, you're pretty and everything, but let's face it: nobody's that pretty."
Helen by Ellen McLaughlin is a unique adaptation of Euripides' play of the same title.
The Trojan War is over and Helen, the face that launched a thousand ships, western civilization's original Celebutante, isn't getting her freak on with Paris in Troy or acting the part of Menelaus' First Lady in Sparta. In a surprising spin on the ancient myth, the Gods have shipped Helen to a three star hotel in Egypt to wait out the war in virtue, disconnect, and boredom. Helen's life consists of sitting, preening, and waiting for her husband to find and rescue her (which he totally will...right?). This sharp comedy turns a pointed eye on the idolization of the rich and famous, war, and the extraordinarily difficult quest to love one's self.
Help Vintage Theater Collective produce this uncommon vision of the Helen of Troy myth by award winning playwright Ellen McLaughlin. Helen is the first production of our 2011 season as the first resident company at Strawdog Theatre. Your aid will directly support the production's design (Helen prefers only the best hotels) and artists' compensation.
