To finish my first book about my inaugural trip abroad and resultant expatriation, I need to return overseas.
The Backstory
In 2007, I traveled abroad for the first time, and I did it alone. Over the course of four weeks, I visited seven countries on two continents with only a carry-on compliant backpack in tow. I brought neither phone nor computer, and I used CouchSurfing.org to sort my accommodations.
I filled several Moleskines with the account of my journey, and I transformed this into a substantial (but incomplete) final project for my degree in Creative Writing. As a result of my travels, I expatriated to England in 2008. Clearly something went awry, however, because I've been back in the States for several years.
Atypical American: From Here to There and Back Again is the creative nonfiction recounting of my inaugural journey overseas and resultant unsuccessful expatriation.
The Kickstart
Atypical American belongs on the travel literature shelf of your local bookstore—not the memoir section. Memories fade, and some details did not make it into my journals. I must retrace my footsteps in order to provide concrete details to my story.
The $3,500 I aim to raise will be used as follows:
$1000 round trip plane fare to Europe (from Nashville to London)
$1000 travel within Europe (trains, planes, ferries, metros, bikes, etc.)
$1000 one month's spending money (food, drink, postcards!)
$500 emergency funds (sometimes Couch Surfing doesn't go as planned)
