About this project
100 Years ago, Richard Throssel photographed the Crow or Apsaa'looka Indian Tribe on their southern Montana Reservation. Throssel was the first Native American to photograph Indian people in North America and he lived on the Crow Reservation. Consequently his Crow photographs are unique because his contextual perspective in photographing the Crow is unique.
The "Crow Tribal Photographs, Then & Now" project entails creating a photographic and narrative archive of the Crow as they live on their Reservation, now, in 2012. I'm Dan Hayward, and I'll create this archive during a full years time. I've worked as a professional photographer for over 30 years. The project has 4 main goals. First, to use the project to benefit the Crow tribe and People. Second, to create a contemporary archive to compliment Throssel's photographs. Third, to dovetail my photographs with Throssel's images and then to create a number of products from those images and narratives, including a large variety of printed media and a framed photo exhibition. One exhibition will be given to the Crow Tribe. The last goal is to greatly increase the regional, national and international audience for Throssel's photographs.

When you pledge to the project, it’s just that, a pledge, not an actual donation. It only becomes a donation IF the project reaches it's financial goal, and only after the fund raising has ended. Then, within a day or two after the funding period has ended, the actual transactions take place, so only then do your pledges become donations. I’m a photographer living in Laramie Wyoming. I’ve been shooting professionally for over 30 years, doing editorial, fine art and commercial work throughout my career. I grew up in the west and take that personal contextual link to the inner mountain west, and to it’s people, into my work…. and into this project. I’ve been honored to be associated with Indians for nearly 20 years and have followed that connection as it has led me into this project.
In 2002 I finished my Masters Thesis. In it, I analyzed the photographs by Richard Throssel of the Crow and Northern Cheyenne People living on their reservations in the early 1900’s.
Now I want to create a collection of photographs and narratives to compliment Throsse’s work of 100 years ago.
I’m very personable, humorous, sincere and am a talented photographer and writer, and with your assistance, I’ll produce a great project in the Crow Tribal Photographs, Then & Now….
