Digital Download -- released!
Tonight, we sent the digital download of the Interior Gaze album to our backers! This calls for an overview of the completed project.
As I stated in the Kickstarter intro video, the 10 new songs are inspired by Blessed John Paul II. In his “Theology of the Body” he spoke about the moment when Adam and Eve first met.
He said, “They see and know each other with all the peace of the interior gaze.”
This musical collection speaks of the joy and struggle in seeing myself and others with the peace of the interior gaze. Many times I fall short of this goal.
But when I succeed, I get a glimpse of heaven!
I consider the musical genre to be “pop-soul.” You will also hear elements of gospel, jazz, folk, country, rock, and hip-hop.
Strictly speaking, the lyrics do not carry a religious tone. Rather, they speak openly of real-life experiences, either imbued with or striving for the peace of the interior gaze.
Elements of this project have exceeded my expectations. Other elements have fallen short.
I am so very pleased with how the music sounds. It’s really “me.” I knew that timing would be a challenge, but we have met our projected release deadlines so far.
On the down side, in one of my early project updates, I wrote that I would share all of the lyrics for the songs, plus a summary of how the Theology of the Body inspired each one.
I have only released lyrics/background stories for 6 of the 10 tracks. I also realize now that gracefully describing a connection to Theology of the Body might be an entire project of its own.
There were a few surprises along the way of production, as well.
We brought in several guest musicians and singers. We were sadly unable to team with some of the people we intended to. I was stunned by how uplifting it was to work with David C. Smith as my producer. I know that he is so proud of this project.
In the end, I’m sharing my heart through this music. I hope these songs can be an insight into the peace of the interior gaze, the rose-colored glasses that tint my world.
CD Release Date Set!
We are officially finished with the Interior Gaze CD Project.
As I mentioned in my last update, I recorded my lead vocals last month in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Since then, we conducted a few local recording sessions (one with my brother Kenny; see photo below), producer David C. Smith mixed and mastered all of the tracks, and we finalized the album artwork.
Now, the CDs are in the manufacturing phase!

Backers -- the physical copy of the CD will arrive in your mailbox just as soon as we can mail them to you! We expect to receive the copies around May 14th. In the meantime, watch your email for the digital download.

Recording with Catholic Central Students
Check out this brief video from a recent recording session in Grand Rapids, if you are brave enough. You will hear completely un-mixed vocals in the background, together with a very basic piano and drum track. We are going to add more vocals and different instrumentation as we progress. This is just a tiny glimpse of the process.
