An Indiana Jones-ish adventure / fantasy aimed at getting kids of all ages excited about history and reading!
Alex Mortimer & The Tombs of Atlantis
"Exploding ships… magnificent monsters… evil overlords. Sounds as if it came out of a book!”
So says Tom W. Liat (aka “The Old Man Who Lived in a Tree”) in The Tombs of Atlantis, the second installment in the Alex Mortimer series of historical fantasy novels for kids. Like its predecessor, The Beast of Wildeor, The Tombs of Atlantis will be written with the goal of getting boys in particular fired up about books and reading...
Featuring 14-year-old Alex Mortimer, The Tombs of Atlantis will deliver the kind of old-fashioned adventure that has entertained young readers for decades. Written and illustrated in the tradition of such great tales as The Hobbit and Treasure Island, the story will be a mix of the real and the imagined: real people, places and machines from history, intermingled with fictional characters, mythical creatures, and a smidgens of steampunk and magic.
Set just months after the 1929 Wall Street Crash, the story reveals a world slipping toward chaos and war. Alex, a humble ship’s stoker, has just learned he’s the last of the Lords of Allegiance, a once powerful ancient order connected to King Arthur and Merlin. He’s also all that stands between mankind and certain destruction. Along with his privileged friend Sarah Greystone – a strong female character girls will relate to – and the ancient Tom W. Liat, Alex must find Atlantis, the final resting place of the evil Ultimus, before it’s too late.
The Tombs of Atlantis will also introduce concepts such as the importance of friendship, tolerance and empathy, as well as the environment and conservation.
It’s our goal to see the Alex Mortimer series become available to the widest possible audience, and in so doing inspire a generation of kids to read. The traditional route for such projects is to find a literary agent who then finds a publisher who then prints the book and distributes it worldwide. While this model still works, it’s a tough – though by no means impossible – nut to crack.
Writers today have many options when it comes to getting their work out there, including Kickstarter. Here’s a very simplistic account of our journey so far:
- Write and illustrate Book #1 (Check!)
- Publish limited print run (Check!)
- Market locally (Check!)
- Publicity (Check!)
- Build platform and fan base (Check!)
- Pitch larger publishers
- Repeat the process for Book #2… but this time add Kickstarter!

Is all this talk about the importance of reading true?
Well, don't take our word for it. Here's what the Harvard Business Review has to say on the matter:
Is there any bad language, gratuitous violence or sexual content in the Alex Mortimer series?
None whatsoever! One or two of the monsters are a little scary, Alex has a near death experience in Book #1… and, ok, so there’s a fart joke, but that’s as bad as it gets.
How many books will there be in the series? Enough to get Alex involved in World War II where he not only flies a Spitfire during the Battle of Britain, but befriends the very real Captain B.A.Dearsley… the author’s grandfather (therein lies a tale)! Book #3 will be called Alex Mortimer & The Lords of Allegiance.
What have people said about The Beast of Wildeor?
“The Beast of Wildeor is a cool mix of historical fiction and fantasy. It is a completely different re-telling of the King Arthur/Merlin legend. I really can't wait to read the second book!” – This Kid Reviews Books!
“A fast-paced historical fantasy novel I couldn’t put down.” – Readers Nominate Their Favourite Books (Toronto Star)
"Grips you from the first chapter... and teaches some history to boot." – You've read The Hunger Games - twice. Now what? (The Globe and Mail)
"A perfect blend of historical fiction with magical realism and an added a touch of modern-day teen angst…brilliant!" – Roxie's Blog
“Filled with extraordinary characters and remarkably beautiful creatures of land, sea, and air, the mystery swirls around two young teens thrown together who are truly mystified by their part in the unfolding drama. All young adventurers will love this! – Jo Marshall
Has a bizarre real-life twist to the series occurred?
Yes! An incredible “story-behind-the-story” has recently been uncovered with the accidental discovery by the author – through his book – of a previously unknown family connection in Europe! We can't reveal any details yet as some of those concerned are still coming to terms with the discovery.
