This money will create a reliable outdoor classroom garden in the Hamtramck Colonial Housing Projects and at the detroit contemporary.
The Story of two Gardens…
The Kids Garden:
The Kid’s Garden is a four-year-old vegetable garden KT Andresky started with the help of the Hamtramck Recreation Center and the youth at the Colonial Housing Projects. The Kid’s Garden is tucked away on the far end of the playground inside the housing projects on the border of Detroit and Hamtramck. Here many residents enroll their kids ages 6-14 in spring and summer gardening and art classes taught by KT. Weekly lessons focus on youth relationships with art and fresh food while creatively cultivating the playground.
Since 2007, KT has been a volunteer at the Catherine Ferguson Academy’s Farm. Inspired by urban farming pioneer and science teacher Paul Weertz, KT has formed her own fundamental education of sustainable lifestyles by incorporating art education. Her first class, Mixed Media Art and Urban Gardening, taught grades 2nd through 5th at University Preparatory Academy’s Ellen Thompson Campus in 2008. This year at the Hamtramck Colonial Housing Projects and at the detroit contemporary gallery, she will be teaching her fourth-year refined version of art education using materials and concepts from gardens and farms.
The detroit contemporary garden:
As a division of the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit, the detroit contemporary is exploring the intersection of farming and art as necessary and related components of culture. Under the creative guidance of KT, Director of Agriculture and Exhibitions, the outdoor performance yard will be converted into practical green spaces. The gardens have been designed and will be built by local artists, architects and landscape designers as permanent installations in the outdoor area of the detroit contemporary where many performances take place. These gardens are designed to enhance the performance experience and will also be an outdoor classroom for our up-coming urban gardening educational program.

Dear Supporters,
Thank you all!!! I am very excited to see these projects come to life. Thank You for all of your support to make this happen. I will keep you updated with the construction progress which will start in mid July at the detroit contemporary and be completed by the fall. The detroit contemporary also received a $5,000 Home Depot Grant which will pay for most of the material costs constructing several raised beds and hoop houses.
The Hamtramck Housing Projects classroom garden will be educating about sixty kids starting the last week of June. I am very excited to teach them in such a beautifully renovated out-door classroom. Our raised beds have been built and filled with Detroit Dirt (Detroit Zoo Compost) I think this will be the biggest harvest year yet.
All of the prizes will be sent out by the end of July, be on the look out for yours and thank you again. This has touched the lives of many and many more to come.
Sincerely,
Kt Andresky
