The End of the Beginning
On the day this effort of ours finishes, I will be in Los Angeles and it will be the day after the first serious showing of my work outside a comics context in my whole life. More than likely I will be utterly exhausted and hopefully, a happy wee Michael. This showing will be one of the milestones of my life, and I would very much love to meet as many of you there on the nineteenth as can possibly make it, just to personally thank you. It is a wish of mine that this effort ends as fabulously as it began.
And once more to tell you that every red cent will go to, for once and for all, ending an episode of my life that no longer bears any resemblance to the first chapter of my public career. This new beginning of mine is something I believe should have happened many years ago and I pledge to throw myself as fully into the making of art as I did way back when the first issue of Puma Blues first hit the stands back in 1986. With the major exception that I know now what I did not know then: art has no deadline, no boundaries and makes no apologies to anyone, nor should it.
I have traveled a very long and at times dark, lonely painful road to get here, and I promise not to waste a moment of it looking back.
Please throw off the jaded, cynical mindset that runs like a river of sludge through our modern culture and celebrate with me.
Thank you all,
M.Z.

Michael! This whole thing makes me very happy. It show me that art CAN prevail over the harshness of the sometimes "jaded cynical mindset" of the world. I wish I could be at the gallery, it looks like such a fine collection of art and artists, you are in good company. I am very happy for you, you deserve it.

Wishing you the best of days for tomorrow, being in England unfortunately I won't have the chance to shake your hand but I hope many others will. It's spring here, and the blackbird chicks in my clematis are helping me throw off those cynical blinkers you mention. May it be the same for you.

I would LOVE to get there, but it's slightly geographically impossible right now.
I've been a long-time fan of yours, Michael, and I always wondered why there wasn't a LOT more of your work to be found. Now I see.
Looking forward to picking up the new thing!

I hear what you're saying about art not having a deadline, but I can't really understand it at this point in my career. To me it seems like if there's no deadline, I'll never want to finish. Maybe because you worked under deadlines, you know how to bring your work to a level of completion that you're satisfied with in a reasonable amount of time?

Sorry I can't make it but best of luck, chief.

Michael, having met you, I feel no one deserves continued success more than you. Good luck at the showing, sorry I won't be there to see it. I will see you in SanDiego again this year though. Thanks for the beautiful art over the years.
