About this project

The Don't Tell Darlings are here to tell you, our new album "Sugar for Sugar" is coming out September 23rd, and through this project, you can reserve your piece of the music pie early! You don't hate music or pie...do you?

So...Pre-Order Your Copy Now for Just $10!

Here's the story. We've recorded and are now finishing production on our second album, the first to bring together Megan and Millie's tightly intertwined vocals, guitar, and banjo with the bass and fiddle stylings of their fantastic collaborators, Lew Burrus and Old Man Kelly. This album, like the last, features a mix of traditional and original songs in or influenced by a variety of early americana styles, including old-time, early country-blues, honky-tonk, and swing. The last one fixed your wagon, and this one'll shake it up again!

Although things are well underway, we've got a little further to go in bringing the CD from our hearts to your ipods. With this project, we're offering you the chance to order your CD now, and by doing so, to help us cover the rest of our production costs. You know you want to do it! And by doing it now rather than waiting a few more weeks, you'll make "Sugar for Sugar" an even sweeter success by letting us finish up the work rather than re-direct our efforts into writing songs about the poorhouse! :)

So what we're saying is, we don't want your watch and chain, but we sort of *do* want your greenback dollar, and for the PRE-SALE COST of only $10*, you can easily sign up for your very own copy of "Sugar for Sugar," to be distributed in person or by mail as soon as the album is released. Also, since record production is a bit of an undertaking, further contributions--which will go directly to finalizing album production and distribution--are more than welcome and will be rewarded with various treats we know you'll love.

*For pledges of more than $10, you have the option of getting an additional CD per additional $10 pledged. Just send us an email (donttelldarlings@gmail.com) to let us know if you're looking for multiple CDs, and if so, how many.

The Don't Tell Darlings draw their music from a deep well of old-time, bluegrass, Western swing, gypsy jazz, and early country, along with a healthy dose of Ms. Millie's fine originals. Defying genres, their music can only be described as "a Depression-era mix tape". Megan and Millie's honey-sweet harmonies meet with Old Man Kelly's fiddle on fire and Lew Burrus' bass-thumping rhythm for a classic old-time instrumentation that is anything but traditional.

The duo first met in college on the plains of Minnesota and, after a few years of adventures musical and otherwise, together and apart, they re-united in Charlottesville, VA to sing their sweet songs in the shadows of the Blue Ridge. After successfully playing as a duo and releasing their first album "Fix Your Wagon" in 2009, they were delighted when long-time Charlottesville bass thumper Lew Burrus and mandolin/dobro artists Jeff York joined the fray. When York skipped town for a job in Colorado, the Darlings had no choice but to weedle their way into the heart of friend and musical mischief maker Old Man Kelly: fiddler, guitarist, punk-rocker, and one-man sea shanty band.

The Darlings have played throughout Virginia, the mid-Atlantic, and regionally, including Johnny D's in Somerville, Massachusetts, Googie's Lounge in NYC, and closer to home at the Charlottesville Pavilion. They play in a wide variety of settings, from traditional music venues and festivals, to house concerts and private appearances. Wherever they are, their music continues to defy categorization. They're a premium blend of Midwest thunderstorms, New England Nor'easters, Minnesota skies and sweet potato fries. They are:

Millie Ammirati: vocals, banjo, guitar, songstress
Megan Rose Orwig: vocals, rhythm guitar, mouth trumpet
Lew Burrus: upright bass, occasional voice of God
Liam "Old Man" Kelly: fiddle, resonator guitar, pedal steel, washboard, kazoo
