388 Atlantic Avenue/The Commons
The amazing Melissa Ennen has generously provided her rooftop for the first satellite painting of 2010.
Though she has owned the building for nearly two decades, she has recently dedicated the entire space to an ambitious community building project she's calling The Commons - with historical implications as guiding principles. A brief excerpt from a text explaining her philosophy states,
"The attack on the commons has sparked a new movement of citizens who are standing up to protect the things that belong to all of us. More than just an activist cause, the commons is becoming a model for thinking differently about now we make decisions, manage resources and think about responsibilities."
So far, the Commons has hosted a Black Farmers conference (with attendees from all over the country and Canada), permaculture lectures and gatherings and provides a permanent home for the Brooklyn Mothers group. The summer schedule is packed with art lectures, workshops, beehives (literally!) and gardening workshops.
I couldn't be more excited to have a new community who are facing the future with love and enthusiasm.
