The Seattle Drum School's curriculum in a single volume; with exercises to develop stick control and independence across all styles.
This kickstarter has two goals, both related to providing music education to a wider audience online. Goal number one is to raise $2000 to complete a method book that would be a primer for all aspiring drummers to work from. If we successfully raise $2000, we will be able to finish the formatting and layout of this book, print hard copies for future use at the Seattle Drum School, and make all of the printed lessons available online - for free.
The second goal is to raise money for digital video lessons as a companion to the written material. The number of lessons is directly influenced by the success of this campaign. If we were to raise $6000, we would be able to make a full series of lessons covering all of the material in the book. This would also allow us to work with several different drummers to show different style applications and techniques. The money would help us pay for production of these videos, as well as pay visiting artists who would be helping us create the lessons. We could potentially be working with well-known drummers from the Seattle area, the Berklee College of Music professors, and several successful touring musicians who have previously participated in Seattle Drum School events. Any money over $2000 will allow us to create excellent educational content, but may limit our ability to work with outside educators and reduce the quantity of videos produced. Either way, all of the videos available to you online - for free.
About the Seattle Drum School: It is a center for music education with two locations in the Seattle metropolitan area. They began by offering drum lessons 25 years ago and have expanded into a full service music education center, offering lessons for guitar, bass, piano, turntables, percussion, brass and woodwind instruments. Both locations, one in Northgate and one in Georgetown, have all-ages concert venues that provide a place for up and coming bands to showcase the music that they create in a supportive, community oriented environment. They also house a recording studio that has produced records of many different genres, from jazz to indie rock. It is a place that is very special to me, as are the people who teach and study there. I know that many of the people who have studied there would say the same thing (Ti Ka Di Mi Ta Ka Di Mi is a way of life!).
Seattle Drum School owner Steve Smith has developed most of this material over many years, and it is taught and studied by countless other drummers in the Seattle area and beyond. I personally studied with Steve and other teachers at the school, and I have found Steve's methods and concepts to be extremely valuable. After studying with the teachers at the drum school I went on to graduate with honors from the Berklee College of Music, and I can testify that the material in this book was responsible for giving me a solid foundation going into my collegiate music studies. With Steve Smith's blessing, this project is my way to give something back to the community that has treated me so well; both at the Seattle Drum School and in music circles worldwide.
