We're bringing classic comedic theater to the masses in Musser Park this summer. But we need your help!
Creative Works of Lancaster is a nonprofit organization that produces unique performing arts events in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In August 2011, following smaller successes throughout the City, we launched our inaugural Works in the Park project, a play performed in Musser Park that is absolutely free to the public and is targeted at local families who typically do not get to experience high-quality theater. Last year, we produced George Bernard Shaw's Arms and the Man, a classic British farce. This summer, we are crossing back over the pond to depression-era New York with Room Service, a 1937 Broadway hit by John Murray and Allen Boretz. The script is so funny that the film rights were immediately bought for the Marx Brothers, and it was later made into a musical, Step Lively, with Frank Sinatra in his first starring role.
Room Service tells the story of Gordon Miller, a producer trying to stage a new Broadway play and running into riotous difficulties. He and his colleagues face tenacious creditors, ferocious hotel managers who want to evict the cast, and investors who inconveniently stop checks. Add to the mix a naive young playwright, a classical Russian actor who doubles as a room service waiter, and a stage director who can't think with his pants on....
Will Miller and his ragtag gang succeed in their quest to produce "Godspeed: A Historical Fantasy" (more hysterical than historical)? Will their attempt to stall the hotel manager by faking every illness in the medical book succeed? Will their devious plans bring them Broadway fame or box seats in jail?
Room Service proves that the show must go on and is guaranteed to serve up tons of laughs for a summer evening.
