About this project

My name is Miguel Sabogal. I am a experimental filmmaker in Baltimore Maryland. My previous work was a series of 3 self-funded films shot on 16mm titled CUBE that premiered at the 2009 Maryland Film Festival. CUBE is a film about the birth and death of memory and it has it's own website located here: http://cubefilm.tumblr.com/

I am currently working on raising money for a short film which I am shooting in Super 16mm. The film entitled "Jacobs" is the story of a young white city doctor in an interracial marriage. He returns with his wife to his rural birth town to care for his sick mother. Upon his return Jacobs runs into conflicts within the town which threaten both his wife and his American pride.

Undertaking a narrative short of about 15 minutes on film requires a greater number of considerations than the experimental shorts that I'm used to working in. Through Kickstarter I am hoping to raise $5,000 to cover the cost of film developing, prints, telecine, being able to rent additional equipment that I need but do not own, pay for basic publicity costs after the film has been completed, and most importantly to cover the cost of converting a 16mm camera that I'm borrowing to a super 16mm film gate. $5,000 will help me get a majority of this film done but your help in surpassing that goal will ensure that the film gets 100% done and into film festivals in late 2010/early 2011.

I'm fortunate to have kind artistic friends who are helping me offer you some nice rewards for your investment. There are HOLGA photos that are hand-shot and developed by myself, DVDs of my film CUBE that feature personally screen printed cover art, screen printed CUBE American Apparel T-shirts, and the opportunity to own a hand-edited 16mm print of a CUBE film.

The minimum donation is just one dollar, and every donation counts. If you are behind this film, please help spread the word by sending emails, posting on social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter), and talking to people the old-fashioned way about this new film from Baltimore.

Many thanks, in advance, for your support.

Miguel Sabogal is an arts organizer, musician, and filmmaker living in Baltimore, Maryland. He holds both a Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from the Johns Hopkins University and a Post-Baccalaureate certificate in video from the Maryland Institute College of Art. His work focuses on the relationship between narrative exposition and the physical qualities of the film medium itself. Narrative concepts are explored through parsing of traditional storytelling elements while the intentional use of camera errors highlight the elastic qualities of the film emulsion.
