Shifter Magazine seeks your support in publishing its 19th issue, which will be launched this September at The New York Art Book Fair.
Over the last eight years we have published 18 issues of Shifter – a labor of love founded by Sreshta Rit Premnath in 2004 and now co-edited with Matthew Metzger. Over the years we have funded this project from our meager bank accounts, but now as we prepare for our first presentation at the New York Art Book Fair with Shifter’s 19th issue, we ask for your support.
We would like to increase the scope of our magazine and eventually pay our contributors. In order to do this we have applied for grants and received NYFA’s Fiscal Sponsorship and are happy to report that the prestigious Graham Foundation has awarded us funding for our 20th issue.
We urge you to help us as we take Shifter to a new level. With your contribution, however small or large, we will publish our two part 19th issue and present a beautiful booth at the New York Art Book Fair.
Shifter is a topical artist-published magazine co-edited by Sreshta Rit Premnath and Matthew Metzger. The magazine is published several times a year, each issue exploring a theme, which has ranged from the concept of intention to the notion of “transparent white.” By providing a platform for thinkers from diverse disciplines and backgrounds, Shifter aims to illuminate and broaden our understanding of the intersections between contemporary artistic, political and philosophical issues, through both visual and textual means. www.shifter-magazine.com
Originally conceived as an online magazine in order to create an inter-continental "commons," Shifter now engages in a multiplicity of formats including printed magazines, public dialogues, and exhibitions. This has allowed for extended discourse and additional access to Shifter's content by diverse audiences.
Shifter was first published in 2004 by its founding editor, Sreshta Rit Premnath. Issues 11 to 16 saw a series of guest co-editors including Steven Lam, Jane Jin Kaisen, Kajsa Dahlberg, Avi Alpert, Abhishek Hazra and Warren Neidich. Beginning with Shifter 17 in 2011 Matthew Metzger joined Shifter as a permanent co-editor.
We have had more than two hundred incredible contributors over the past eight years. Gregory Sholette, Amy Sillman, Sam Durant, Vijay Iyer, Zoe Crosher, Simon Leung, Pedro Barateiro, Nora Schultz, Patricia Esquivias, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Éric Alliez are only a few of the many contributors who we are proud to have published.
Shifter has slowly yet steadily produced 18 issues, both as a print magazine and as a digital pdf available at no cost on its website. After 8 years we at Shifter want to push our limits in the spirit of change. Recognizing a growing desire and energy for platforms that allow for a cross-breeding of ideas and projects between disciplinary boundaries, Shifter aims to expand its reach and solidify itself as a staple in the art and print media community.
To embark on this new change, Shifter is excited to be participating for the first time in the New York Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1 this September. We are thrilled to be included in one of the most important gatherings of local and international publishers across many media. This will be Shifter’s biggest audience yet, and a great opportunity to put our modest magazine in the hands of potential readers, distributors, collaborators and contributors.
For our big debut at The New York Art Book Fair, Shifter will be publishing a special full-color, newsprint issue, Shifter 19, Part 1. Entitled “Proposals,” this issue invites a distinguished group of contributors who negotiate their dual roles as artist and educator. Each contribution tackles the notion of a proposal as a complex form, which often knots together Intention with Desire, and Negotiation with Collaboration. Our exciting line-up of contributors include: Luis Camnitzer, R.H. Quaytman, Marjetica Potrc, Raqs Media Collective, Michelle Grabner, Ulrike Muller and Doug Ashford amongst many others. Shifter 19, Part 2 will be launched in the spring of 2013 and provide a more detailed deliberation on art and education by artist-educators.
While Shifter’s medium of choice is the printed page comprised of words and images, we also need the medium of money to make this special issue possible! In the past, we relied on our own humble bank accounts, the generosity of in-kind donations and a few sales to produce each issue. After eight quick years, we have come to recognize our own persistence: we realize that we have not gone away, and that we’re here to stay! However, we would like to begin a new era of fiscal solvency and hope you will help usher us into this new phase of Shifter’s existence with your contribution, however small or large.
We have big plans in the very near future to begin fundraising through our Fiscal Sponsorship by NYFA, and in fact, have already secured a generous grant through the Graham Foundation for our 20th issue slated for October 2013! We hope you will contribute to our special 19th issue because we want it to be excellent for our first big presentation at The New York Art Book Fair in September.
If your support helps us reach our financial goal, all of the money will be used to write, edit, illustrate, design, publish, and print our 19th issue of Shifter. Each level of support includes rewards – from a unique letterpress bookmark and copies of Shifter to limited edition posters, hand-printed canvas tote bags, and limited edition artworks by our artist-editors and contributors.
