Queer Black Women poets + musicians tour the country for night of a salon-styled night of art, libations and genuine fellowship.
THE REVIVAL is salon styled tour of queer artists and allies.
With dynamic performances from poets and musicians alike, THE REVIVAL weaves a salon styled night of artistry, libations and genuine fellowship. Historically, queer collectives have hosted artist 'salons'in their homes-- because there was nowhere else to go. This effort honors a tradition born out of necessity, and is at once a sanctuary (every leg of the tour takes place in a private home) and a concert.
“[THE REVIVAL] was a beautiful night in Brooklyn and I, along with so many others, had so much fun. I'm sure the same is true for all the other cities y'all blessed with your presence. It felt good to be appreciated and understood as an artist and to feel my work and time was/is valued as important. I'm excited to see how the REVIVAL grows and evolves over time!”
-Yvonne Fly Onakeme Etaghene, Poet, Volcano's Birthright{s}, Revival Guest Poet, 2010.
“Counter-culture prose, lyrics of identity, sex and raw emotion dance off the tongues of well-established poets and others who are rising the ranks. The adage goes poetry is to please or educate and it appears the crowd inside this warm, poorly-lit ground floor apartment are getting both.”
-Marina Stanley, Bedstuy Patch Online Magazine, 2011.

Last year’s REVIVAL tour reached over 400 black women artists and allies along the eastcoast. It garnered media coverage from The Advocate and Afterellen.com; and backing from literary staples like Poets & Writers, and make/shift magazine. This year, with your support, The Revival's Poetry is Everything tour aims to connect women, creators and change makers through DC, Durham, Toronto, Atlanta, Brooklyn, Chicago and beyond.
REVIVAL 2012 POETRY IS EVERYTHING TOUR COMMITS TO:
- Youth Empowerment. Troupe members are excited to host poetry workshops with local youth and collegiate groups in select cities.
-
Sharing Language. With participating poets from Def Poetry Jam to Cave Canem fellows, THE REVIVAL transcends both page and stage and simply shares a story.
-
Sharing Everything. This year, follow artists on the road with our live documentarian. Tune in via all social media outlets and participating online network to see the troupe behind the scenes. Witness their silly antics, jam sessions, conversations with strangers and moments of inspiration.
HELP US REACH OUR GOAL
From the performers who open their hearts, to the hosts who open their homes and fry plantains in the morning-- this tour is a 100% community effort. With this tour we've witnessed the power of solidarity between QWOC. Your support enables us to:
- Secure a passenger van for our travels.
- And of course, GAS and tolls!
- Provide breakfast for touring troupe
- Help books venues and sound equipment rental.
- And most importantly, aims to compensate all participating artists!

FAQ

None of this could be done without the support of the community. Thank you for
opening your taking the time to learn about this effort and sharing with friends! To become more involved as the tour nears, we are definitely always in needs of concert hosts, to hold the event, as well as lodging hosts for troupe members! Even let us know what poets in your area you would like to see! -
Local promoters, activists, community workers are encouraged to participate as a
Revival City Sister. City Sisters are asked to partner with the organization by being
our eyes where we aren’t: secure locations and community sponsors, promote locally,
rent chairs and become a part of THE REVIVAL family business. -
In each city, every Revival takes place in a private home or similar setting. Women
are greeted with music, dim lights and smiling faces. From the moment they walk in
their creative sides are incited by stimulating conversation and the bustle of poets
preparing their sets. Wine is poured, seats are stolen. Then the concert starts. -
We’ve come a long way from the first tour and piling in troupe member, Jade
Foster’s old Hyundai Santa Fe. This year Revival troupe hopes to secure a passenger
van to take them safely along the road. And a couple of good playlists on the way. -
Of course! And come share and fellowship with us as well!
