Adventure-modules for Risus: The Anything RPG! Written, produced, tested, and published free forever, for everyone.
FIRST, A DIRE WARNING! (OooOooOoo!)
As the project has grown, it's begun to sprawl a bit, so there are edits, updates, reward tiers jammed in after other tiers, typos, and all kinds of related nonsense, so the short version is: I'm making some Risus adventure modules, the PDFs will be free for everyone, and the more support there is, the more stuff gets made. The end.
As for the rest ... pardon our mess; it's become quite a party around here! Care to join in?
THE SNOOPY-DANCE OF AWESOME
- We have buried the original funding goal! ($500)
- We practically sprinted by the sensible-stuff funding goal ($1,000)
- We have danced past the fully-deluxified funding goal! ($1,500)
- We have beaten the guaranteed-second-adventure goal! ($1,800)
- We have slain the 2nd-adventure-funded-to-the-level-of-the-original-project-goal-or-possibly-much-better-depending-on-the-breaks-of-the-1st-adventure funding goal (it needs a more elegant name, I know) ($2,100)
- We have trounced the 2nd-adventure-now-fully-which-is-to-say-sensibly-funded-level-which-is-the-level-just-before-the-progression-changes-entirely-and-a-third-adventure-shows-up-next-goal, goal! (the 2nd adventure is a problem child for naming, clearly) ($2,600)
- We have tiptoed delicately beyond the guaranteed-third-adventure goal! ($3,000)
- We have sauntered by the both-the-second-and-third-adventures-will-now-be-sensibly-funded goal! ($3,500)
- We've ventured beyond the realm of the introduction of a fourth (humble-but-awesome) adventure goal ($4,000)
- We've frosted and sprinkled the sensible-funding-goal for the fourth adventure ($4,500)
- And now we've planted the brightly-burning candle of the fifth adventure (gently, lightly funded for that hint of sweetness) into the frosting ($5,000) which is also one thousand percent of the project goal.
- ... And now we're nurturing the funding of the fifth adventure, guiding it into the company of its siblings!
And by we, I mean you. Because I'm just the dude with the graph paper and the megaphone. Frankly, the stick-dudes do most of the real work.
And: Holy cats in colorful, careening kayaks! A thousand percent? Thank you guys, you've amazed me. I'll be doing my best to return the favor :)
By the way, I did a typo oopsie in the $50 reward: it is included in all tiers of $100 and up, not just $150 and up! My bad! Not allowed to edit it, or I would :)
Read on for the details (and check the Updates tab, too!); I've left the original stuff mostly intact (tweaked a bit here and there to keep it accurate and to clarify some stuff) so some of it is now (awesomely) out of date ...
HERE'S THE PITCH
I'd love to build a library of free Risus: The Anything RPG adventure-modules, both to provide handy gaming material for existing Risus fans and a way for us to lure more Risus fans into the fold. I already have a "private stock" of well-tested Risus scenarios I run when appearing at cons, and those would make an excellent foundation for such a library. With this kickstart, you can help to fund the design, writing, testing and production time necessary to make the first such module a reality. The adventure, if funded, will be made available to the public in PDF form, free of charge, for keepsies and always, just like Risus itself.
WHAT'LL IT BE ABOUT?
This first outing will be a traditional fantasy module ... or, the Risus idea of what a traditional fantasy module is like! You can expect monsters and ruins, muddy town-streets and eccentric NPCs ... it won't be a comedy adventure, exactly, just the kind of kick-your-shoes-off approach to high adventure I'm most fond of (if you're familiar with Points in Space or Uresia, that's the tone I mean). The adventure will be designed for a single session (3-6 hours) of gamerly madness and panic, and be designed for expansion and contraction to fit the GM's needs. The adventure will be designed for painless insertion into the trad-fantasy world of your choice (I'll use place-names from my own, but that'll be disposable fluff [... or, now that the module is well-funded, it may be fluff that comes complete with some spiffy reusable maps]).
WHAT'S THE $$$ PAY FOR?
I've set the goal ($500, which amounts to about $450 of funding after Amazon and KS take their cuts) to fund a modest project in the neighborhood of 4,000-6,000 words, 6-8 illustrations (in the mighty Risus manner) and at least one nifty map (ditto) presented in a PDF of approximately 8 pages. Within will be juicy fun-time fantasy fun-fun. [The original, humble goal seems so innocent now ... like a delicate flower, hiding a flamethrower behind its back]
WHAT IF SUPPORT GOES HIGH?
Exceeding the goal (going over $500) will beef the budget on the module, potentially adding any of the following: more detail, more pages, more illustrations, more/nicer maps, player handouts, pretty pregen sheets for convention runs, supplementary setting material, side-quests, expansion notes, custom Sparks miniatures to be included with the module, and so on. At the highest end (a bottom-line, after-cuts budget of $1,350 or so, equal to around $1,500 in pledges), the PDF would grow to around the 24-page range and be packed with shiny extras.
Exceedingly exceeding the goal (pledges in the $1,800+ range) would put additional free modules on the schedule down the line, already paid-for (so, with sufficiently enthusiastic support, this kickstart might result in a small library of free adventures for Risus, each produced to the same standard you've already seen in Risus, The Risus Companion, and A Kringle in Time). Depending on my own schedule, I may use some of the funds to hire some of my favorite colleagues to write some of the additional adventures (and I've worked with some of the best game writers around, so that would be pretty sweet). Heck, I might even approach some of my favorite classic RPG illustrators and say "Hey, can you draw ... stick figures?" because how cool would that be?
In every case, the adventures will be designed for ease of prep, ease of campaign-setting portability, and maximum adventure-fun-grooviness. Genre may vary (that is, if supporters end up funding multiple modules, I might choose to hit multiple genre bases, doing some space-opera, post-apocalyptic, etc).
WHY NOT JUST MAKE AND SELL IT?
Single-evening adventure modules - and I mean groovy ones, with real testing and considerate (if not fancy) production values, exist in this strange middle zone between "small enough to just do as a freebie" and "big enough to sell at a reasonable price." This is partly down to scale and partly down to the extra-nichey-niche nature of such modules which, as a rule, sell only to a very specialized subset of those who'd actually enjoy such a thing. If I were to produce this module and just put it in the Cumberland catalogue, I'd have to charge something like $6 per copy (for the 8-page version; $15 for the 24-page version!), which is ... unacceptable, really. And only a handful of people would get to enjoy it. But this way, with community support, if the average contribution from members of the Risus Mailing List is just 55 cents, it happens. Bada-bing. And it's free forever, and more people get to enjoy it, and it's another freebie that Risus fans can use to show off Risus to potential new Risus fans. Which is a pretty sweet deal.
WILL THERE BE FUTURE PROJECTS?

Ally of the Order: Your name will appear somewhere in the adventure (possibly hidden in a graphic element, because I'm sneaky that way). This reward is included in all the higher-tier ones.Estimated delivery: Feb 2013
Pledge $5 or more
Advance Guard: You get your copy of the finished module six months before I release it (free and forever) to the public.Estimated delivery: Aug 2012
Pledge $10 or more
Early Adopter: As above, and when the new edition of Risus is completed next year, you'll get it 30 days in advance of the public release (if you're an IOR member, you'll get the new Risus Companion 30 days early as well). This reward (added late in the game) is included in all higher tiers, even if they don't mention it or imply it might not be.Estimated delivery: Apr 2013
Pledge $25 or more
Scout: As above, plus you'll have early access to the adventure's playtest and blindtest drafts, and get a special Supporters-Only Edition of the finished module (including a behind-the-scenes production archive).Estimated delivery: Aug 2012

Scout Equipped: I'll be producing a limited-run softcover book collecting the entire output of this project, including both the first and second adventures (and more if they happen!), plus the contents of the production archive, plus EXTRA STUFF. I'll also throw in Risus itself and a few more things to round it out (I hope you'll be genuinely surprised by some of it!), so it'll be a groovy book of ... cool stuff. This particular book will ONLY exist for the purposes of this reward. Each copy issued will be signed and numbered, with numbers issued in the order the rewards are claimed. I'll also throw in the obligatory extra stick-figure doodle when I sign it, of course (and I'll take requests on your doodle, just remember I really seriously can't draw for beans). Pledge amount includes shipping within the continental U.S.; add $15 if I'll need to ship it elsewhere, thanks! Note that while most of these rewards "stack" like matryoshka dolls, with each larger tier including each smaller one, this reward is one of those NOT included in that daisy-chain. This reward IS included in any reward of $150 or more, but is included automatically in no other (claiming it automatically grants you the results of the $1, $5, and $25 rewards, as well). If you want TWO or THREE copies (the limit is three), add $50 per additional copy (no need to adjust further for shipping, even if outside the Continental U.S.) Note that since this reward will be collecting material from the project's entire output, not just the first module, the expected delivery date is later than most.Estimated delivery: Dec 2012
Pledge $75 or more
Scout ENCUMBERED: This is just like Scout Equipped (above, complete with the book and all) except you're MORE equipped! I've been on the horn with dice manufacturers arranging some snazzy CUSTOM D-SIXES to commemorate this event. This particular design will be unique to this Kickstarter and not repeated. Taking this reward gets you a full Risus-playable set of SIX custom dice (see Update #17 for more), in addition to all the other benefits and inclusions of Scout Equipped. Same shipping rules apply (your book[s] and dice will ship at the same time in the same package). You can also add ADDITIONAL sets of dice (for higher-piles-of-dice stacking purposes, or as gifts, or eBay fodder or whatever) for $25 per set. This reward is included in all tiers of $100 and above, automatically (and with those tiers, you can also choose to add more if you want multiple books and/or dice-sets).Estimated delivery: Dec 2012

Scout Decorated: Identical to "Scout ENCUMBERED" in ALL ways, except you _also_ get one free *original illustration* (either an LCB or a map) from one of the adventures, tucked into your copy of the book. This will be a randomly-selected piece from the stock of loose illustrations, and thus this reward-tier is necessarily limited in number. Obviously, it won't be great art (LCBs, natch) but it'll be a unique memento, and you can have fun comparing it to the digital version everyone else sees (because yes, they're so humble I have to process them in Photoshop, for real).Estimated delivery: Dec 2012

I do a separate project notebook (a physical composition book, journal or other hardcopy notebook) for every project I do. This is where I draft the text (sometimes some, sometimes most, sometimes all), try maps on for size, outline, write my name in the margins to pass the time, etc. The one for the main adventure-module will be a doozy! And if you take this reward, IT IS YOURS: uncensored, doodly, raw creative-process nonsense, fresh from the felt-tip pen (not included; get your own pen). There may also be mustard stains; I can't predict that sort of thing. There WILL be stick figures. My own personal copy of Risus Excessively Deluxe. It's the softcover version, hand-covered in protective plastic and in great shape (not because I don't game with it a lot ... just because I never have to look stuff up in the middle of a game, mainly, because ... well, Risus). This is a one-of-a-kind item (literally, I'll be ordering a replacement for myself!), and while it already has my name in it (in case I lose it!) I'll also (A) inscribe it (B) doodle extra stick-figures in it (C) throw in a few odd items to use as bookmarks and (D) doodle odd comments throughout the book before I send it out (even if you ask me not to).
