About this project
Greetings all!
We (Paul and Fred) were inspired by the escalating bedbug epidemic to create a sci-fi rock musical about an exterminator who is hell-bent on ridding the world of these little bloodsuckers once and for all.
ABOUT THE SHOW:
BEDBUGS!!! is an original musical that is cut from the same bloody sequined cloth as Rocky Horror and Little Shop. Beneath the outrageous plot and campy tone of the show lies a moving story of overcoming poisonous relationships, and in doing so finding your true friends and your true self. The music and lyrics propel the story in a fast, exciting and melodic 80’s-inspired rock-pop score.
HISTORY:
Our show was a huge hit in the 2008 New York Musical Theatre Festival, where it played a sold-out run with added performances, received NYMF awards for our actors Celina Carvajal and Brian Charles Rooney and honorable mentions for book, music and ensemble performance, not to mention loads of fantastic reviews, and buzz that still circulates the NYC theatre community today.
Since the festival, Paul and I have been tightening and revamping BEDBUGS!!! for its next incarnation, and this is where you come in...
We want to self-produce a 16-performance run in April 2011. We are currently researching venue options, and have our director, choreographer, designers and actors on board. All we need is your generous donations.
WHAT WILL YOUR DONATION PAY FOR:
Rental of venue and equipment, rehearsal space, technical personnel, paper printing, as well as paying for website enhancements, advertising, promotion personnel, press packets, cds and promotional materials, and compensation for the talented people involved in the production. Any extra money we may raise will go to the continual development of the show. (Better demos, continued promotion, music videos and future productions.)
The $4,000 will pay for our Industry Readings/ Concert on January 17th which will be to attract potential investors and commercial sponsors. Any money that we raise now above the $4000 will go towards the expenses of mounting the full production in April.
We are DETERMINED to get this show back on it's feet. We will keep you updated as we lock in our dates, venue, etc.

(note: The latch-hook rug is a very time-consuming process. We will be working on it as we have time, so you can expect that reward by late spring/ early summer. PAUL LESCHEN (Music, Concept & Story) is a Brooklyn-based composer, arranger, and pianist. He studied music at Northwestern University. He received a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Music for his first musical, "Twist: Please Sir, May I Have Some More." Paul is a collaborator and pianist for the international superstars Scissor Sisters– as well as gender illusionists Murray Hill and Hedda Lettuce.
FRED SAUTER (Lyrics, Book, Concept & Story) is from Central PA. He studied visual art at MICA in Baltimore and later received his MFA from the NYU Tisch Musical Theatre Writing Program.
Beyond "BEDBUGS!!!" and their multitude of solo projects and other collaborations, Paul and Fred recently had the first reading of their 2nd show "Astronaut Diaper and Other Tales of Modern Love" and are hard at work on their 3rd show "Karma Kills."
