Wow!!! Thank you so much!!! We may have reached our goal, but Axe Orixa is just starting the birth process!!! Stay with us through the whole experience. All of our backers will be the first to see the film, we'll post it on Vimeo with a password just for our backers.
Any extra monies raised beyond $30,050 will allow us to go so much further and make an even better film!
We want to film Rosangela teaching an Orixá dance class,
We want to film Mariella performing with her roots/jazz band,
We want to film the priestess Makota Valdina who stated: “I am not a descendent of slaves, I am a descendent of people forced into slavery.”
And if we raise enough, we'd like to film Mateus Aleluia of Os Tincoãs.
REMEMBER: We can’t do this without you!
GIVE what you can and please pass this on to your friends and family.

About the film:
Axé Orixá (pronounced ashay orishah) is a film of the dance, drumming and chants of the Orixás (Afro-Brazilian gods and goddesses) and how they manifest today through some of Bahia’s greatest musicians and legendary dancers. The film unfolds through dreamlike sequences of music and dance featuring seven of the Orixás delicately linked through the artists’ explanation of their spiritual realities, and how the rituals live on in Brazilian culture today. Axé Orixá enables modern Bahian artists to reimagine their traditions in a uniquely visionary form.
Where does this film take place?
In Salvador, the tropical Bahian capital known as the “Land of Happiness” for its joyous dance, music and largest street carnival in the world. It has given birth to many stars of Brazilian music including Joao Gilberto, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Maria Bethania, Carlinhos Brown, and Olodum.
Yet Salvador’s musical heritage stems from its sad history as the entry port for the millions of African people forced into slavery. On reaching Brazil these people had lost everything, but managed to hold onto the music, dance and beliefs of their spiritual practices, known as Candomblé.
Candomblé views reality as a manifestation of the spiritual and creative force called Axé, the infinite and all-pervading creative energy of the universe.
The Orixás, the gods and goddesses of the Candomblé tradition, are the luminous manifestations of Axé, moving in the human realm as forces of nature and archetypal structures of human mind and emotion.
Why this project now?
With the upcoming FIFA World Cup and Summer Olympics scheduled for Brazil, all eyes are on the country to see what makes it so unique. By channeling the power of the Orixás into a more tangible source (film), we hope to reveal the beauty at the heart of Bahian culture in an exciting new form, and to emphasize its importance in part of what it means to be "Brazilian".
I’ve been extremely lucky to gain the collaborative trust of many of the great visionaries in Bahia: choreographer Rosangela Silvestre, singer and performer Mariella Santiago, musician, sound engineer and cameraman Tadeu Mascarenhas, singer, dancer and priest Gilmar Sampaio, and many of the dancers and musicians from the internationally renown Balé Folclórico da Bahia. Computational media artist Daniel Sabio has come on board here in the US in the role of production coordinator, editor and cameraman.
Axé Orixá is dedicated to the memory of the life of Luis Fernando, known as FORMIGÃO, who was a Principle Dancer of Balé Folclórico da Bahia, Bloco Afro Malê Ballet and Viva Bahia. These were the first dance companies in Bahia to base their repertoire on the dance and movements of the Orixás rather than European classical dance. Sadly Luis Fernando passed on after he danced Xangô for us.
How Kickstarter works and what happens if we don’t reach our goal.
Kickstarter is all-or-nothing funding so if we don't make it to $30,050 we get absolutely nothing, no one's credit card is charged and no one receives our fantastic rewards. Every dollar does count, so please chip in!
What are we going to do with the $30,050?
Seems like a low number for a film budget doesn’t it? Of course, it’s insanely low!!! I've put in about $15,000 so far doing all the filming, editing and paying of the performers except for Rosangela Silvestre who helped me get this project off the ground. But we’ve gone as far as we can alone and now we need your help. In order to finish the film and put it out into the world, we need your support to cover final filming, editing, scoring, sound and color mastering.
Can you donate outside of the United States?
Yes, you only need a credit card!
When will I be able to see the film?
We hope to finish by Fall 2013, but we promise to faithfully keep you updated with clips of the film as we proceed.
Can I increase my pledge once it’s been made?
Yes! If you want to increase your contribution or change your reward please sign in to Kickstarter. Go to the Axé Orixá campaign page, and the green “Back This Project” button will be replaced with a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click and enter a new amount or choose a new reward!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Since we are mostly in the post-production phase of the film, the risks are less. However, we still need to travel to Brazil with our equipment, film in relatively dangerous locations, and edit the remaining footage once back home. Money, therefore, would be our biggest challenge so far. If we do end up reaching beyond our stated goal, we will have added incentive to go after big names in the Brazilian music world to include in the film, but may not be able to film with them because of licensing issues, etc.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
