Monsters Royale is a book of original monster illustrations and poems, influenced by Japanese yokai folklore and kaiju films.
What Is Monsters Royale?
Just in time for Halloween, my project is a book of monster drawings and poems, titled Monsters Royale. It is a bestiary of original monsters, featuring black-and-white illustrations accompanied by humorous poems. The monsters vary from cute and cuddly (like a ten-story wiener dog) to scary and sinister (assorted closet-dwelling boogiemen) - influenced by a variety of sources such as the old Universal movie monsters, Japanese yokai folklore, Godzilla kaiju films, Jim Henson's Muppet monsters, and the fearsome critters of American lumberjack tall tales. There's also some Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss thrown in there too. There are ghosts, goblins, witches, werewolves, gargoyles, and other assorted things that go bump in the night - 50 to 100 in all. The end result will be a small, beautifully-designed black and white paperback book, a fun read and conversation piece for monster lovers and the young-at-heart.
How Will I Achieve This?
I started this project two years ago, and in that time I have been constantly drawing and writing, steadily adding monsters to the menagerie and designing the layout of the book. At this point, there is enough material for two or three books, so the time is ripe to share this with the rest of the world. Each entry in the book will include one page of poetry and at least one page of illustration. Some of the monsters who will appear in the book can be seen here:

I will continue working on the book through the end of the year and will hopefully be able to have things finalized for printing by January, so therefore rewards will ship around February of next year.
What Will I Do With The Funding?
The money raised by this project will allow me to produce a small print run of this book, and will go toward printing, ISBN registration, and other associated costs such as the shipping and production of rewards, etc. I have set the goal at what I believe to be a rather conservative amount.
At this point I am planning to publish the book via Amazon's CreateSpace program, which is a print-on-demand service allowing authors to self-publish. Costs involved include the printing itself, file setup and layout, proofs, ebook conversion, shipping, etc. Additionally, the time involved in creating the illustrations, writing the text, working up the layouts and design has been considerable. As this is strictly a do-it-yourself indie punk underground endeavor, there is no big publisher with deep pockets providing the funding - no hefty advance, no giant marketing push - just li'l old me, a wiener dog, a laptop, and a whole lotta Number Two pencils. And that's why I need your help.
