'Slipping: Skate's Impact on Egypt' is a passion project on Egypt's first and only skateboard shop and the resulting scene.
Hello all, and thank you for taking the time to view my project, Slipping: Skate’s Impact on Egypt.
This past fall, just after finishing my BS in Business Administration, I decided to take a three month trip to Egypt, freelancing as a photographer/cinematographer and looking for a project with which to start my post-graduate cinematography portfolio.
Egypt, as I’m sure you are aware, is in an abrasive state of re-alignment - a transformation, for which many have risked their lives. Through the pursuit of a democratic society and the knowledge that one can live his/her life according to his/her own happiness, new lifestyles and subsequent forms of expression have begun to sprout rapidly. This is a welcome change for most and even a relief to some who now understand they needn’t live their lives as previously dictated by an oppressive society.
If you look at certain areas of Egypt with a magnifying glass, you see evidence of this drastic uprising in new and exciting forms of expression. One specific example of this is skateboarding.
I spent the latter half of my stay in Egypt following, filming and speaking with two brothers, Omar and Cherif, who had the courage to start Egypt’s very first, and still only, skateboard shop, SkateImpact. The result of this has been my first feature-length documentary.
Omar and Cherif took time out of their busy schedules not only to tell me about skateboarding in Egypt but also to introduce me to those who have played a vital role in the emergence of this new way of life.
Having already filmed and edited this project, you may be asking, ‘Why have a Kickstarter account?’. I need one because I have exhausted all resources getting this far. To complete this process, I need funding to make DVDs and to pay for the rights to some of the music I use throughout the documentary.
To make the DVDs, I must send a master file to a post-production Jedi. This person will create what is called a glass master of the entire project and then send it off to the west coast where the actual high definition DVDs will be made. This costs many dollars.
The portion of the funding that will be allocated to the musicians won’t be as much as the DVD production. But, unlike the DVD production, I’m happy to pass on this money for these artists. Because, like myself, they are doing something creative and on their own – something that rarely receives the compensation/recognition it deserves. The following artists have been nothing short of amazing in all their help and willingness to cooperate...

So, no matter how small a donation, I could use your help. In donating money to this project not only do you receive the awesome incentives (listed right), but you get the feeling of knowing you helped someone pursue his passion. The latter may not sound like much, but to me, it means the world.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
