Beto to Boston and Beyond—Funds Needed for Shipping Art Works: Knowing that art has the power to influence culture; How would you visually represent hip-hop, rock or salsa?
Puerto Rican visual artist and musician Beto Torrens provides this opportunity through interactive sound installations and life-size popular music portraits that challenge stereotypes. Seeking funds to bring Beto and his works from San Juan, PR to Boston, MA—LA GALERÍA at Villa Victoria Center for the Arts needs your help. We only have three short weeks to raise $500 for the shipping and travel expenses needed for Beto’s solo show ROMPESTEREOTIPOS (BREAKING STEREOTYPES), which opens May 19, 2011. Your generous donation will get you cool gifts so please give what you can as every dollar counts!
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Beto Torrens is a powerhouse in the Puerto Rican art and music scenes who dedicates his time teaching music to at-risk youth throughout the island. More than an exhibit, Beto will participate as much as possible in the exciting arts and education programs that IBA offers in the Villa Victoria affordable housing community. Housed at Villa Victoria Center for the Arts, the largest multi-disciplinary Latino arts center in New England—our gallery is the first in the region to focus on presenting contemporary art created by Latinos and those commenting on the Latin American diaspora. Many of theartists we present (Adal Maldonado, Miguel Luciano, Chandra Dieppa-Ortiz) explore the complex questions of Latino cultural identities in constantly shifting local, regional, national and international contexts. Villa Victoria Center for the Arts is a program of the community development organization IBA - Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción.
