Small Stuff
Here are our thoughts on recently reaching the fundraising goal for our Public Art 2.0project that will be in installed on April 12th in Central Square.
We had 79 people donate money so that we could continue the Centerboard Arts project. 79 people decided to take out their credit card and commit to supporting art activity in downtown Lynn. Think about it… The 79 are not receiving anything other than their name being put on a sign.
We would like to think they chose to spend their money to be a part of something, something small that allows them to say, “I am part of the Lynn Public Art Project”. What else could it be? If we did not reach our goal, most people would not have noticed that the Art in downtown would slowly go away.
Our 79 backers obviously liked our Public Art Project 1.0 and wanted it to continue.
We know from watching other cities that revitalize their communities that it is all the small stuff being done by unattached individuals and organizations that gets congealed together to the point that it actually looks like there was some master plan. Hint: most of those cities did not have a master plan. What they had was groups of people, like our 79, that decided they were going to do something small for no other reason than to say, “look what I am a part of”.
Centerboard asks that you consider doing something small that you wouldn’t normally do to help revitalize your city. It does not have to be Art and it does not have to be money, it can be volunteering to read to a child, cleaning a park or a book drive.
It has to be something that connects you with others who are also looking to do something to pitch in.
