About this project
Artists struggle in the 21st century to live off of art, to thrive in a digital age. The old paradigms of selling art, creating it, procuring it, and appreciating it have all changed with the global mood, and in the United States, the arts have become so undervalued that some of the greatest artists of our time will never get discovered.
21st Century Artists is a photography and writing project I would like to do to find out how artists today are creating, producing, interpreting, and understanding art in a totally new ballgame. I will do thorough interviews with artists of all sorts: writers, painters, musicians, digital media artists, and so on. My hope is to chronicle their struggles, their successes, and their methods for adapting to the digital age.
The book itself will contain original photography as well as original writing, all done by me. The final project will have several major components:
1) A print book with the artists’ stories.
2) A digital format book.
3) A movie preview.
4) A short film (30 minutes) based on the interviews that will be posted for viewing on a dedicated website.
Most importantly, this is an opportunity for me, a multi-talented artist, to take advantage of my own skills. I will write the book. I will write the music for the movie. I will take the photos. I will shoot the video. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for one of those struggling 21st century artists.
The website will be a unique site dedicated only to this project, but it will also have a presence on my three current websites, where you can see examples of my work.
I will be blogging on my website, www.danielcavallari.com, about the project once the project is funded. When the dedicated website is up and running, I will start blogging on that site instead.
