You and your siblings are stuck in an alien world with old friends and unknown enemies; take control of the story and save yourselves.

What Is Magin?

Magin is a magical world which spins, parallel to our Earth, around a celestial axis. A door between these worlds can be opened; allowing beings to cross between the worlds instantaneously. An RPG at heart, A New Order has a focus on strategy-based story and mechanics.

How is it different?

A New Order is different from its predecessors primarily in how we approach character customization, stats, and skills--especially in battle. There is also an underlying political strategy within the game’s storyline mechanics.
Characters will start with a set amount of HP which, unless the player finds some easter eggs or cheats, will stay relatively the same until special events trigger a raise. Instead of enemies hitting for a certain range of HP like you see in many games--hearken to walkthrough mantras of “gargoyles in the desert will hit for 65-100 HP with each hit so make sure you have at least 1000 HP”--they will hit for a certain percentage of your health. Players will want to train their attack and defense percentages as they go through the game so that they can keep up with the attack and defense levels of their enemies.
The Attack stat equals the base % of health taken from the target’s current HP.
The Defense stat equals the % of attack that doesn’t hit.
So if a character had 10K health and their enemy hit with an Attack Stat of 30% against their defense rate of 25%, the character would lose 750 health.
30% of 10k = 3k
25% of 3k = 750

Raising a character’s HP denotes a change in his/her storyline--most commonly that of an age increase; in an era like Magin, life expectancy grew some as you grew older. Another reason is to decrease the feeling that some potions might be wasted. Because some characters will have naturally low HP and others will have high, a number of potion strengths are needed.
Also, unlike traditional RPGs, only some aspects of the story are immovable and linear; the real story evolves from characters’ reactions to those immovable events--reactions mandated by the player. Certain parts of the ending will remain the same throughout each possible ending, though tone and atmosphere will have changed greatly thanks to the player’s choices.

What needs funding?

Your most appreciated support will be used to make Magin: A New Order to the utmost of our abilities--high quality and supported by a dedicated team. The goal of $12,000 will primarily pay artists for their sprites, environments, animated trailers and cutscenes, menu designs, profiles, and music. This money will also be used to register Copyrights and Trademarks so we can protect everyone’s hard work. A small portion of the funds will also go to Ricky Harris, our programmer. Any funds donated beyond our goal will allow for voice acting as a default feature, a quality microphone for our foley artist, software upgrades for some of our artists, and a greater variety of merchandise.

How developed is it?
Because story development for Magin began in November of 2006, we have the main storyline fully outlined--including choice-lines; about half of the sidequests have been developed; and a quarter of the story has been scripted.
Starting early 2011, game production began in earnest. We are now focused on developing and defining the realm of Magin further so that players are immersed in a world filled with culture and life. Additional sidequests will be tailored to perfectly fit this world, no boring and faceless fetch-quests or escorts. A large framework of mythology has already been developed and will be shared through in-game interactions with items and NPCs. Since 2011, a number of features have been detailed and HUD mockups have been created. Coding for these features recently began. Those mockups are available for viewing below and a detailed list of features is available publicly through Google Docs.

I thank you for the time you've already given to this project and hope that you enjoy everything you learn about it below. My goal, above all other things, is to bring a unique story to the table that people can enjoy repeatedly.

The First Monarchs say that watching the world’s birth was like watching a painting stretch across a canvas without painter or brush. They were born with but not of the world and, as such, were able to witness its birth... and wield gifts of great power. One of these represented the physical embodiment of a door which held close a portal to another world; his name was Coeus. When he died, that door opened and allowed free passage between both worlds.

While at first this free passage seemed beneficial to both worlds, the First Monarchs gradually realized it could lead to their world’s destruction. With great sadness, the Monarchs slowly barred passage to different types of people until only humans with open minds, untouched by cynicism and darkness, could pass between the worlds.

Fearing that the common folk of their world would turn against them for this limitation and weary of the responsibility, the First Monarchs cast aside their throne and disappeared into the mists of history. Some of their descendents know of their ancestry and bear it with pride... but most descendents were left in the dark of even their parents’ parts in the world’s history.

The Corneley siblings discovered Magin during their early childhood and have grown up with this alien world as their secret romping grounds. They gained friends and garnered respect within the world; now it seems they may have also gained an enemy or two. After a visit to Magin, the siblings find themselves unable to return home.

In an attempt to identify and overcome their obstacle, the siblings--through the actions and choices of the player--become involved in an escalation of events which could lead to genocide, world-wide warfare, ‘natural’ disasters, and betrayals.

Alicia Corneley
  • Age: 18-24
  • Gender: Female
  • Most on Earth see her as a kind girl with her head in the clouds and many comment on how much more she could be doing--like her brothers--if she'd just be grounded. On Magin, however, she is seen as a great visionary and many comment on how commendable it is that she's so firmly grounded in her skills and ambitions. In truth, she is a high spirited young woman with a warm heart and a strong want to give back to the world that gave her so much adventure and life as a child. As a sister, Alicia is normally the most patient oldest child one might ever witness... but when sparks fly, her fuse is short.
Blaise
  • Age:17-23
  • Gender: Male
  • Personality: Though Blaise is a very caring individual and would never intentionally offend someone, he will occasionally get caught up in a flurry of intellectual thoughts and blurt things out as he thinks them with no realization until after the fact that he's said something rude. Apart from the occasional rudeness, most people who come into any lengthy contact with the young medicine man fell in love with his charm and genuine care for others' well being. With a strong sense of self-preservation, Blaise believes there's a way for everyone to survive any battle but, lacking the opportunity to work out that way, he will fight for himself and the majority instead of everyone but himself.

Russel
  • Age:16 or 22
  • Gender: Male
  • Personality: A practical adventurer, Russel likes to rely on wit and knowledge rather than brute force and intuition. While preparing to fence--and even during the duel--he analyzes his opponent to discover weaknesses he can exploit. Sly and manipulative when dealing with enemies, young Russel Corneley is not someone you want to upset... but fiercely loyal and protective, he is one of the best friends one could find. Typically the quiet sort, Russel likes his books, scrolls, and ancient ruins but can steamroll a conversation when he actually finds something worth saying.
Maeve
  • Age: 15-21
  • Gender: Female
  • Personality: Quiet and gentle, Maeve is never the first to approach a stranger; but, she is quick to befriend once someone has introduced themselves. Hardly one to lose her temper, Maeve is known for her ability to listen to other’s problems without judgment; and she remains steadfast in her loyalties, no matter the cost to herself. Soft spoken, she does not often speak out in decision making processes; but when she does, everybody listens. Many have described her as being wise beyond her years.
Treasa
  • Age: 17-23
  • Gender: Female
  • Personality: Often described as having a bit of a “vague” disposition, Treasa is gifted—and cursed—with the ability to see beyond—into the possible futures and reasons they exist. She can tell a person’s true path as soon as it becomes clear—and she can also tell if they are ready for the knowledge. This knowledge gives her insight and wisdom beyond her years. She tends to be kind and generous, never looking down on others, but she is also very aware of the world around her and isn’t liable to trust and forgive blindly. Because of her tendency to bestow a title when she informs a person of their path, she has been given the honorific “Namer”.
Riona
  • Age: 18-24
  • Gender: Female
  • Personality: A natural born leader, Riona impresses others with her ability to make decisions swiftly while compromising for the best of any given group. While prone to giving speeches, she appreciates the opinions of others and is willing to step aside for those with greater experience. As a child, Riona was very outgoing and adventurous, always getting scrapes and small cuts. With age, however, she has learned how to avoid the majority of those minor injuries and comes out of both political exploits and physical endeavors unscathed. Overprotective of family and a steadfast friend, Riona can get a bit feisty when the people she cares about are endangered.
