The project will enable me to edit then scan the thousands of archived images I made during my 10 years in London that started in 1980.
In 1980, the same year I started making photographs, I travelled for the first time to London for a college Mass Media Seminar. That started a ten-year period of living there, during which time I began my career working in the media industry in Europe.
But I never stopped making images.
During the 1980s I had a darkroom in my first apartment in London. I had an enlarger and struck up a friendship with Gene Nocon, the master photographic printer. We are still in touch today. Luckily I have had a chance to hand print some of the B&W images, so that you can see a few of them here.
I have been lugging around my archive of mostly 35mm film negatives all my life. Until recently I was also lugging the darkroom equipment around as well, until finally a few years ago I donated all the gear to my local town hall where at least now I am able to use the darkroom.
The archive I have is fairly organised, by year. It consists of a mixture of black and white and color 35 mm negatives. I want to go deeper into this archive, pull out the best images, and make a project that will effectively document the era. I intend to prepare these images for publication, exhibition, book and/or a multimedia production.
With the connections I have in the media industry and also with other artists groups in Europe and in the US, I believe I can bring the project to a wider audience. That is what I need your support for.
I need to go through all the boxes. Then sort and digitise all the best ones, or at least, the ones I think that have the best potential for telling the story of that era. I need a negative scanner, and sufficient hard disk space, and a much bigger monitor and a better software set-up for editing. I need a real light table too!
There will also, of course, be the print preparation costs, for approximately 20 final physical images. When I did the calculation, I realised it costs quite a lot, as well as realizing the costs of your rewards! I estimate the project to require around $18000 worth of support to realize, and I will fund anything needed over and above that amount.
