SwingX is a jazz-inspired feature film project made by swing enthusiasts for the enjoyment of everyone the world round. SwingX is a modern day tale of a clumsy IT specialist who finds himself unemployed and in a predicament that only quick footwork can solve.
A Great Story.
SwingX is a modern day “fish out of water” comedy. Jason is a clumsy IT specialist who when suddenly and unexpectedly unemployed, is mistakenly hired as a dance teacher at a local school. Something seems better than nothing and hilarity ensues as he tries to stay one step ahead and falls head over heels into the world of Lindy Hop.
all experience fear and uncertainty in everydaylife,
whether it's the fear of being judged by those around us or the fear
that our actions will fall short. SwingX uses the positive, high
energy world of Lindy Hop to demonstrate the benefits of facing
challenges head on.
Lindy Hop as a dance form has a long and colorful history. SwingX is a funny, quirky, and touching story that draws itsinspiration from the rich style and community of Lindy Hop.
Killer Dance Moves.
You bring 'em, we shoot 'em!
nothing worse than watching “bad dancing” being portrayed as
“good dancing.” This won't happen with SwingX. The film will be
choreographed by Kevin St. Laurent and Jo Hoffberg, two world class
Lindy Hop instructors and competitors who have dedicated their lives
to promoting swing. If you want to learn more about these two
wonderful dancers, check out how they are changing the world “one
rockstep at a time” here.
Besides having world class choreography for the film we'll also have extraordinary dancers, namely, you. That's right - you! We don't want just any old dancers for this movie. We want authentic, down and dirty, “I dance in my sleep” Lindy Hoppers. During filming we're going to throw a SwingX Lindy Exchange! Dancers from all over the world are welcome to come and spend a weekend of daytime shooting and late night dancing for the film. Our Kickstarter supporters will be the first ones with tickets!
SwingX is slated to be shot the summer of 2013. Movies cost $$, and SwingX is no exception. The good news is that a lot of the professionals working on the film love to dance and will be working for free – or close to it, but there are still other production costs to cover.
Making a movie consists of three main parts: Pre-Production (Planning), Production (Filming), and Post-Production (Editing). We've already finished most of pre-production and are looking forward to jumping into full production mode. If this project successfully reaches its Kickstarter goal of $60,000, we will have the funds to move forward with production. We are planning on shooting the film in the summer of 2013. The film will be edited immediately afterward and available to all backers by the fall of 2013.
Although the film will not be available for public purchase right away, it will be available to backers as soon as its finished. Once a film is made it has to be distributed. We plan to showcase the film in theaters pending our distribution deal. Regardless, it will be available to the general public. If you want to guarantee a copy, now is your chance to jump in and get one! Click the “Contribute” button on the right to secure your copy of SwingX in stunning, full length, HD digital format.
Make it Happen.
The whole idea of this project is to pull “grass-roots” participation from the swing scene. Having this project on Kickstarter is a big part of the film’s story. We think this movie should be made and we want you to be a part of it. The swing scene is a welcoming, diverse, and tight-knit global family, and we want SwingX to reflect that community. If you like to dance, like to watch dancing, or love someone who shares our passion for this unique artform, then this movie is for you! Pledge your support today and be a part of making this film a reality!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
There are many potential challenges for SwingX. Fortunately, careful planning and hard work can overcome these obstacles. After the funding process, the actual shooting of the film must take place. That means casting actors, securing locations, and hiring quality crew members.
SwingX will take the first round of casting submissions from the swing community itself: script portions will be made available in February 2013, and video auditions will be accepted shortly after for a number of roles in the film. The film is slated to be shot in Cincinnati, Ohio and surrounding area. The varied terrain, historical structures, and beautiful venues make this an ideal area for film production. A number of industry professionals have already offered to join our crew from varying locations in the United States and around the world.
Here are some of the main challenges SwingX must overcome before assuming reality:
1.) Script Finalization. We've got a great story, but we still have a few things that need to be finalized. After funding, our final budget numbers will help determine what venues will become dance scenes from the script. The more locations needed, the more money that must be spent.
2.) Casting. The cast can make or break a film. Finding the right mixture of acting talent and dance skill is extremely important. We will be opening up auditions for video submissions to everyone in the dance scene. With our community’s talent pouring in from all over the world, a large chunk of time will be set aside to intentionally review acting and dance auditions.
3.) Securing Locations. The right settings are crucial to set the visual feel of SwingX. Our script calls for three main locations; a house, a school, and a dance studio. We already have tentative possibilities for all three of these, but there are additional outdoor scenes and dance venues that will require careful consideration in selecting.
4.) Securing Crew. A quality crew is very important for a film! These guys operate cameras, run lights, and record sound. We are looking to shoot with a small crew of 10-12 people. Much of our crew is already lined up, but we are still looking for a quality Director of Photography (DP) to join the team. The DP is responsible for the cinematography in a film, so finding the right person with the ability to capture the feel and energy of Lindy Hop through a camera lens is crucial to the film.
5.) Shooting. Filming SwingX is a huge undertaking. A year’s worth of scheduling, planning, and budgeting will come together during a marathon 21-day shoot lasting from June 24th to July 15th of next year. This hectic (but fun!) process requires tedious scheduling to line up actors, choreographers, and crew members during different portions of the shoot. Our producer, Gex Williams, is spearheading this planning process. His experience in managing theatre, working on film and commercial projects, and running his own company provide critical experience to successfully complete this task.
6.) Editing: The editing process is the culmination of all previous efforts on a film. Everything visualized, scripted, shot, and recorded for SwingX must be brought together and refined again and again. After the final “picture lock,” further audio sweetening and color correcting will bring the film to where it needs to be.
7.) Distribution. Our initial goal of $60,000 will be spent on production and post-production costs. Only a small percentage will be allocated towards traditional marketing efforts. Because of this, SwingX will use film festivals and global networking as a means of reaching larger studios to secure distribution. SwingX will be available for public purchase with an eventual release through Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, and other digital distribution outlets.
We need you to be a part of SwingX! Swing is about community, and that focus will be an integral aspect of the film. Get on board and join your global family: let’s make this film reality!
The SwingX exchange is going to be awesome! This will be a one-time only event with the purpose of bringing wonderful dancers together from all over the world to create and capture the fantastic energy and dance moves the swing scene has to offer.
The event will be held at the culmination of the films 21 day shoot. The SwingX exchange will be July 12'th-14'th, 2013 near Cincinnati, Ohio.
Tickets for this event will most likely ONLY be available during this Kickstarter campaign. Meeting our funding goal will most likely coincide with maxed out occupancy for the event.
This will be different than any other exchange you have been to. The days will be spent filming large dance scenes for the movie; this will include jam circles, Jack'n Jills, the whole works. Night times will be filled with late dances, great music, and getting to know new dancers from all over the world!
