Playwrights West members had an amazing opportunity come up this week. A delegation of Iraqi women playwrights has been visiting the U.S. (NY, DC, and Portland!). They asked to meet us, and yesterday we sat down with them in the Portland Center Stage conference room for a conversation.
With the help of a gifted translator, we talked about everything from censorship to money to the production of Mary Poppins they'd just seen on Broadway. The conversation certainly brought home privileges we take for granted both as artists and as citizens. But what was most striking was how similar our concerns are. In some ways, what was most extraordinary was how ordinary it all was--a bunch of theatre people talking, joking, and asking questions about anything and everything.
We are hopeful of working out some kind of exchange with these playwrights--perhaps starting with readings in each country or the like. We'll keep you posted!
In the meantime, our fundraising is going really well! We're nearly 60% funded, thanks to our generous friends and backers. Thank you so much from all of us!
