About this project
FEAST LA is a recurring nomadic dinner that allows individuals from the community to become patrons of local artists. In exchange for a modest donation, guests enjoy a chef-prepared and locally sourced dinner and live entertainment, and they get a ballot. During the dinner, artists who've submitted project proposals will make brief presentations, and at the end of the dinner, all guests vote on the projects they like best. The artist proposals that receive the most votes get the donation money collected at the door. (After the first FEAST, this will be a self-sustaining project, we'll keep enough money from each event to support the next one, and will continue to work hard to find sponsors and donors so that as much money as possible from the dinner donations goes directly to artists.) It's so simple it's just elegant, right?
FEAST LA started with conversations at downtown LA sidewalk cafes in 2009...artists who'd been getting by weren't actually getting by anymore. They didn't know where the next month's rent money was coming from, or how they were going to buy food, or art supplies. At the same time, philanthropic funding was drying up to near non-existence, and what little was left was hotly competed for by artists who had the swankiest exhibition histories and most prestigious resumes. Plus, many established grants don't allow funds to be spent on routine expenses like groceries or rent. Regular working artists were suffering, and we knew there had to be a way to get money directly to those who needed it as quickly as possible, to keep local creativity afloat and alive and vibrant. Then we heard about a project in New York--big huge grateful shout out to FEAST Brooklyn!--and we knew we'd hit on the perfect way to help our neighbors and ourselves.
So we assembled an amazing team of volunteers that includes local artists, chefs, musicians, florists, production assistants, designers, community activists and more, who've been working really hard to bring the first FEAST LA to the table, at an amazing downtown LA rooftop location in July 2010. We've started to collect artist proposals and we're in the final stretch of making FEAST LA happen. That's where you come in.
We're here on Kickstarter to raise $2500 in 25 days to buy food, supplies, insurance, etc. for our first event, and to ensure that we're able to give really useful grants (and by that we mean significant amounts of money that will really make a difference to artists) right from the first dinner. We appreciate any amount you can contribute, and every single dollar means a lot. Plus, we have some really cool rewards!
LA is home to a vibrant, wildly diverse, lively and enormously talented creative community, and every day, your artist neighbors start out with a blank page, a fresh canvas, a silent music studio or an idea--and they make something from nothing. In addition, if the band comes to your neck of the woods on their regular tour, you'll be their special VIP guests for the show.
