EyeSee360 has been making cool tools for panoramic imaging for more than a decade. We got started at the Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute, making optics for robots to see their environment better. Since then we've found that humans like panoramas, too.
I guess this hasn't worked out for them, if only I waited a little I could have had it for half price http://www.zazz.com.au/daily/thingy/5852
@richardxu I'm asking the same question.. I know they give an option to get 1 item anything for free on their website for the next couple of years but I'm still waiting for the Limited Edition. I hope it will be awesome and much better quality. Let us now Michael. Thanks.
Not worth it I'm afraid. The video is blurry and not what I expected at all. Very disappointed.
Hi Michael... It has been almost a year... I wonder where the $250 pledge goes, besides the one prototype and one retail unit... What happened?
hmmmm, I like mine but just saw a $33 version of it, same GoPano branding, on a chinese site!
What happened to do who pledged $1, where is my name on your website as one of your supporters. ???
Really dissapointed with the product..after Months waiting !! .. I received it about a month ago, and show it off to my friends.. and that's the first and last time I used this product.. It's been sitting on my desk for a long time since.. The quaility not good and the video was blurred and not even fun to look at .. Felt sorry for all the 2000 + backers.. :(
Not was I was expecting. The image quality is really really poor on my iPhone 4 and that lens pops off at any kind of touch or jarring movement. Pushing it on tight can actually make it pop off! I would have thought it would snap on in some way, but it's held on by 2mm of plastic friction and broken wishes.
I understand they probably did the best they could with what they have (quality of iPhone 4 camera) but why even bother creating a product like this if there's no way to make it work out at all? The videos presented when I sent in my backing money made me think that's what I would be getting. The videos aren't even fun, because the quality is that bad.
Well... I guess backer beware, huh? It's part of the risk of backing something unproven in Kickstarter...
Very, very disappointing quality, both the optic and resolution.
If the video quality is limited by the iPhone's using only a small part of the sensor in video mode, I would rather you make the micro to capture decent photos instead of a crappy videos.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the lens clean? Mine is seriously dirty and not being able to get anywhere near the lens nor the plastic covering inside is becoming a major problem. The air solution sounds cute for dust but seriously impractical for anyone living in a country with very high humidity.
I reckon the optic would have been better served with a closed design so you only clean the outside.
Have you looked into my missing shipment?
Regards Max
Do you do wholesale btw?
I received mine last week, and i'm also pretty disappointed. The video quality is blurred and extremely low res. I understand the image is being stretched, etc but I didn't expect the quality to be this bad. Waiting 7 months for this was not worth it. I'd happily give it back.
@Irawan Update 4?
Will anybody help me point out which update video / Information where Michael mentioned that the video taken with GoPano Plus, not GoPano Micro before the project reach the goal ?
I pledged $250 and as a beta tester I have only received the prototype gopano and never received the other 5 gopano and Michael does not provide any help and never take care about me as a customer tester.
I don't think most of people here expect to receive a HD or a close to HD capability 360 camera but a useable camera. The reason that so many angry people because if you look back the project update videos, it doesn't tell everyone that video was produced by GoPano Plus, and those video are gone, just recently M.R made the damage-control statement to the bottom of project home after so many complains, on the other hand, those 'H-quality' demo videos are the actually reason that make this project over successful and disappointed same people later. Would you pledge it if you saw the actual-quality video without a 2nd thought back then?
Hi Michael,
I pledged $100 for 2 x gopano. So far I have received only one piece 3 or 4 weeks ago. Still waiting for the second one. Can you check if the second one was shipped already? The fulfilment page showed "Order Shipped" and Reward: 2 GoPano micro(s). I confirm the address shown is correct.
You can contact me at sinsani@hotmail.com
Also, anyone looking for a HD or a close to HD capability 360 camera can look into getting the yellowbird camera - very cheap only 20K USDs or so!!!!
So till the prices on those cameras come down I am happy with my GoPano micro which I got for $50 and even more happier because my little contribution led to the development of this cool little product.
I am very happy with my GoPano and more so with the awesome piece of technology. I did not expect it to record HD..it is just the way the technology works - the attachment sees a circular video, which occupies only a part of the iphone's camera - the rest is probably thrown away. The flat video is then stretched and wrapped around you - so though you start with a 720p camera you stretch it beyond its limits - it is going to look a little fuzzy. Did any of you notice that the flat video view also looks soo cool and crisp, i tried copying it to camera roll and then to my computer - looks great!
The video quality is very disappointing!!!!! I wasn't expecting high-end video quality…but this is bad. I can't recommend buying the GoPano micro, and I'm not sure if I will try Kickstarter in the future again.
Still no GoPano, from Germany ...
No letter from customs, no answer from "amy@eyesee360.com".
The only thing I can do is wait or give up?
@Richard you are so right. I've shown some guys at work it and even after looking at the quality they were still wanting to know where they could get one. I told a few how much I payed for it and they still even offered me a few more $$ just so they can have one now. I'm seriously thinking about doing it.
As far as video qualit goes...I didn't expect crystal clear & I hope it does get better via software.
My main complaint is the optic and how it doesn't like to stay connected to the case. I can attach it and it seems fine but the moment I move it just drops off. I would say popped off but that would imply that it popped onto the case. On at least two occasions I had to catch it in mid-fall to the ground.
Is there a better idea for keeping the optic attached to the case? As I don't use the app 24/7 I also do not use the case unless I am using the optic so the additional bump mentioned would not bother me. Even though it would have been thicker in that one area it would have made it safer to use.
For all those wanting a refund might I suggest you just go out in public with the gopano, we were swamped with 20 somethings demanding to know what the device was. Even showing them the fuzzy video they thought it was "sick" and I am sure you would find one happy to buy it off me just to show their friends they have something nobody else has. If you painted a dog poo and called it the iTurd apple fan boys would want it :)
Have a look at the Dot app "looker" free download and their examples. I think it should not be too much to ask for the equivalent quality for Gopano. It obviously can be done. Interested to hear others opinion. I think the quality is a fair bit better.
Is there a better place for us to voice our concerns/disappoints about this other than here? Last time i was at the gopanomicro page it didn't seem to have any really support section. has that changed? should we be complaining there? Has anyone returned one yet? How'd that go?
:( how sad. even with 1080p it is HORRIBLE!!! It shouldn't even have the gopano name on it. Can you say, not just fail, nut FAIL!!!!
As others have mentioned, the GoPano has turned out to be a very disappointing product. I understand the possible dangers of backing a project on Kickstarter, but I'm still surprised a company would release a product that was completely unusable and think that was acceptable.
For those complaining that they haven't received their shipments, you haven't missed anything. At least the box is unopened, you can return it for full refund I suppose.
I haven't even received my first GoPano. and it's been over 2 weeks. WTF?
so far really disappointed in this product and can't recommend it to anyone. If it would at least focus! i'd be happy. i'm ok with the low res of the image but not ok with blurry and low res. Can you address this? Is there hope for focus? or is it a lost cause? If so how do we get our money back?
I've got one package a week ago. Still waiting for second one.
Seriously, you did not think that an unusable product would be an issue? Time to step up and make good for the people who help you get this off the ground.
"Honestly we've been doing this for so long that certain things seem so obvious to us, like resolution, that we didn't think to explain it to the uninitiated. "
Wow, this is clearly an unusable product all my video are blurry and unfocused. I was hoping to see a solution here but it looks like I'm not the only one disappointed with the GoPano that shipped. Is there going to be an response from the company?
Hi Michael Rondinelli, as I can see your comment 5 days ago I see the mirror was made in plastic, but not so polished or I don't know... there are another 360 project here http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dot/dot-360o-video-capture-for-the-iphone-4 it cost a little bit more, but, the mirror looks like to be small and may be better image... let's see
Well... I have to agree with everybody here... I'm very disapoited with the quality, as I see, the mirror is problem... I think it have a reflection problem, so, it do not reflect the image well... but When I get the image at Calibrate, I see a good image... or looks better.
I thought the problem was the light, but I saw lot of other samples a day light and those have the same problem...
Well... I think YOU have tested all optics before send, but as I can see you did not thought we will complain?
I would like to know if is possible to have better images or what can I do?
I also have a question/issue.
how do I share a link tot he video once online?
The button that looks like a link only turns blue for me. I want to keep it private and don't want it on FaceBook or twitter, I just want to send a link.
Scott
I have a simple suggestion, if you get better resolution from picture mode, why not offer a still 360 picture option. I could see this quite useful as well. Especially if the quality was that much better.
Just a thought, and it would probably be quite easy to implement in the software/app.
Scott
Quality issue is one problem that we can accept, but blurry artifacts with double-picture-overlay effects is, and i think i speak for all users here, not acceptable. I was not able to produce one useful video. I took over 200 shots, no one is not blurry. I think the idea was good but maybe you better stopped the product as you have seen how much far is the quality from your demo-video.
What can we do now to boost the reduce the blurry and out of focus effects?
Mine relegated to the "waste of time trying" bin. Shame as it is a good idea, just not functional at the moment. Have yet to see any good examples so far. I'm 50% so far with kickstarter. Olloclip is a terific product and is a great example of how it should be done. Gopano "not so great" sorry guys took too long for something below average. I'd have thought the beta testers would have reported this back.
man this is disappointing... just received it and no matter how much I focus all I get is blurry movies. Totally unusable. What hardware was really used to shoot the videos that made me want to back that project? :(
Hi everybody, just writing to update (last message: Germany, no GoPano); I have received my two GoPano last week, two days after writing here. The packages had stickers from the Customs on, but apparently they accepted the "gift" statement, since I was delivered the items via normal DHL. Sorry for all the fellow Germans, I really don't understand why some were delivered and some were not (someone, I read, even had to pay!). Maybe it depends on the Land you live in? I live not far away from a big American base, maybe Customs are more used to get packages from the US? Just a thought... Good luck to all the others!
I think most people understand that to a degree, the iPhone camera will have limited resolution capabilities. We also understand that when pitching the product/idea on kickstarter, it is impossible to demonstrate the final results with a product that doesn't exist yet. However, I think I speak for many customers and backers that we feel misled by the demo video posted as to the quality possible with the GoPano micro. It was not clearly stated that the video would likely be blurrier and significantly lower quality than the sample video posted by GoPano.
I recently emailed GoPano about a refund, and they said they would only provide a full refund if the package was unopened. If the package is opened, they would charge a 30% restocking fee. Make your own conclusions, but I guess it's not worth the trouble to return it since I had to open it to see that the poor video quality made the product almost unusable for anything but a toy....
Thanks Michael, that makes sense, I forgot that switching from Picture to Video would make a difference. Besides, you guys have been designing this type of products for a while so you know better than some bozo from the intertubs :)
P/By the way, after all the complaining, I got my GoPano
G. Man: You are correct that we need to make the image of the mirror as large as possible to maximize our use of real estate. However, the iPhone only uses a small part of the sensor in video mode as opposed to still mode. You can see this easily if you switch between photo and video modes in the Camera app. We designed the optic to use 97% of the vertical pixels in video mode (with 3% margin for alignment error).
This is also the reason we offer video recording but not stills: We had to design for one or the other. We aren't making good use of the sensor for still photos.
Quick Question, and pardon my ignorance if the question is completely wrong. Given that Video quality is constrained by pixels available to take a Pan video using the camera's limited real state, why is the optics designed without taking full advantage of the maximum area that could be captured by the camera? I mean, if you look at a photo taken with the regular photo app but using the GoPano lens, there is a lot of wasted area. Couldn't the 'donut' being filmed would have gone all the way to the longer edge of the rectangle available?
If you want to dust your optic, I recommend using either compressed air or one of those rocket air dusters like this: http://www.amazon.com/s/…
Avoid contact with the mirror surface if you can so it doesn't get scratched. You can use the microfiber satchel that came with the optic for cleaning, but I recommend hand washing it first. If you need to use a liquid cleaner, use either lens cleaning solution or alcohol and apply it to microfiber first. DO NOT use acetone or any other solvents!
We're sorry about the trouble some of you are having with customs. The letter we prepared explaining the Kickstarter process seems to work for some, but not everyone. If you need us to send you an invoice for your pledge amount please email amy@eyesee360.com with the email address you used to back us and your pledge amount.
If you ordered 2-4 optics and you are an international backer, each optic was shipped separately. If you don't receive your remaining office within a couple of days let us know at support@gopano.com.
You guys are lucky. In my country, the tax about 35% from the total value of the item PLUS the SHIPMENT. Unbelievable isn't it? shipment? Yes, it happens here. But for this GoPano Micro, I should thank Michael for writing it as a Gift. Even the custom called me to their office, asking how come I got 3 boxes of gift with the same item. As we know michael put each individual item in separate boxes.
