Hey, we're SCRATCHbread. Our intentions are basically to enhance a common set of ideals shared through food. This means food that is approachable yet sophisticated, plain and simple, and most importantly, absolutely delicious. Yes, we make the goods, but this company is about every single person that supports the ideals and energy of SCRATCH. We just happen to help the thing bounce a bit.
There is only one thing, however, that we can really guarantee with words about SCRATCH… Because the whole point of SCRATCH is that the proof is in the pudding… The guarantee is that once you’ve tried SCRATCH, every time you see, hear & taste something from SCRATCH, you’ll always know it was made from SCRATCH.
PS: Hi Nathan! Thanks for sharing this with me!! :):):)
I'd love to be involved more! Baking, cleaning, decorating, whatever! But I'm in Boston! Maybe we can open a shop here soon!!! Until then, know that you are already so so so loved and supported!! *<:)
I truly hope the magic happens for you! This deserves to be successful and I wish it for you!
WOW! simon, thanks for the gigantic HUG! preach it man. That's what I'm talking about. This is about everyone, grabbing what they want, making it happen as a team. There are so many people with resources to start business and movements and trends. I have to grind, I didn't grow up with much, don't have have much now, and have earned every single thing I've got. I love what i do, and would be willing to be broke, shoeless and hungry to pull it off. But unfortunately, money is what makes things come together. I'll do the work people, we've even got an awesome group of amazing volunteers. Join the group if you want to help!
But Simon and Bonnie are right. 10 bucks, 20 bucks, do us a favor... give up two cocktails this week, and buy us drink, donate what that would be, and be apart of something amazing. We are all SCRATCHbread, remember that, this thing is notthing without your support. grab it, chew on it, and scream! ITS MY RIGHT TO HAVE DELICIOUS FOOD! Lets make it a standard.

Thank you, Simon, for your excellent and well-reasoned set of arguments for supporting small, local businesses like SCRATCHbread. I am in complete agreement. Let's keep spreading the word to friends and family who value this type of enterprise.
@laura
I can see how you would think that simply asking people to give you money to start a business seems selfish considering the state of our economy and unemployment levels. However, small businesses such as this are the first to expand and create jobs, and good jobs at that. Jobs where the employer actually cares about the employee, treats them with respect and pays decently. A business such as this is good for the community and are often times fundamental to reviving downtrodden neighborhoods.
Another point, Matt isn't simply begging for money, he is offering some service in trade, be it cooking classes, advertising, future product, and future product discounts. This type of approach is similar in idea to a CSA program, where you buy shares from a small farmer to help them get through the winter and then they in turn feed you through their harvest season. These small farmers would have a difficult time surviving without the community's involvement.
I think causes like this are especially important in this economy where it is almost impossible for an entrepreneur to get started, leases, permits, and equipment in NYC is incredibly expensive, bank loans for a small business are almost non-existent in this economy, unless you are a larger, perhaps corporate entity. This is about us, the consumers, saying mass produced products full of preservatives are not acceptable. Mass farming techniques are not acceptable. We want a higher standard of food. It all starts with us. If we want it then we should have the conviction to give a hand to a small budding company like Scratchbread. Take a train 2x instead of a taxi and send them the balance. $20-$50 bucks isn't much to most people that live in this city, they'll spend that on brunch or a scarf--think of all the good that we can create together.
Simon, Thanks, you do awesome work yourself, I think we cooked together at some point back in the day... hmmmm.
Milo!_ wow... looks like that love potion we put into our stuff was a little heavy handed that day... note to self: order more love potion :)
Last but not Least, Bonnie_ Your lovely daughter, scone master indeed, I'ts an honor that she has offered her time to SCRATCH... Your so generous with your donation, thank you thank you, looks like your both two generous angels I happened to have ran into. Cheers to you.
Hey Matt-
I believe in what your doing. Keep up the good work man.
HEY BROOKLYN - HEY BED-STUY......support this guy....he's in your neighborhood....give him a chance to show you how fantastic his bread, scones, brownies, & sandwitches are. Do you go to the BK Flea? Meet him, taste his incredible food - SCRATCHbread will only bring greatness to your neighborhood. INVEST IN A LOCAL BUSINESS - INVEST IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD DONATE $$ or Time....
and this is for Laura....perhaps you can ask about his plans before you criticize them...
I am so happy to see the momentum building and funds coming in. I am heartened to see that the total pledge amount has doubled since I first logged on a week or so ago, found the ScratchBread pledge page on Kickstarter, and contributed to your project. I just learned that my sister is going to contribute as well. I am so inspired by the many deserving projects posted on the Kickstarter site and the potential for creative change in our society that Kickstarter supports. Bleak and dark times can open many light-filled doors. It is one of life's puzzling paradoxes, and an instructive one. I am keeping my fingers crossed for the full funding of your project and will keep spreading the word to my friends and family.
One more thing, referencing to you Jeff, until the shop is completely done, sure, I dont want lots of knocks of the window, as I already get that about 20 times a day from the neighborhood... But I just thought of something, Firstly, if you want to check out the shop, I'd love to show it to you... anyone, just drop me an email through my website, and let me know if you want to see the space, help me paint, clean, sand, build, anything... Since I want this to be an interactive community driven goal, If you cant give a buck, perhaps you want to get your hands into something of substance. So why not i say, Perhaps ill throw together a little food 'WORKshop party'? ... Lets build brooklyn food culture, piece by piece... TOGETHER!
Alright, alright... weve got some great energy developing here... THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone so far, and thanks for the clarification Bonnie, I dont mind and appriciate a little challenge, or questioning of our logic and ideals... this is the point, We are trying to invest into cutlture, our lives, and make us all a little better... And yes, I think we can do this with the simple modest ideal bread brings to the table... So make sure were not BS, ask questions, allow us to prove how genuine we are about influencing positive and good heath.
I think traditional forms of fundraising are due much respect, but i think by investing into persons, cultures, communities, opening our doors for a little youth bread throw down, showing people the excitement of working with live food, and how simple it can be... ITS EXCITING!!! I like giving knowledge, and my goal ever since i was young was to invest into youth and give them more confidence... I never had any confidence except what music gave to me when I was singing.... It helped me become, what I hope is a pretty good person. With confidence, we can achieve greatness, not with arrogance. This is why we were called bread, sure we do bread, but its modest, and it has depth in meaning...
I would like to reply to Laura and suggest some things to think about. Laura, I understand your point, but I have a slightly different perspective. I live in the Midwest and value community and positive, sustainable businesses. I see how much such enterprises enliven and enhance community., My take on ScratchBread's effort to raise seed money is that this local, sustainable business will contribute greatly to the community. Most importantly, ScratchBread's ultimate goal seems to be to achieve a self-sustaining status so that it CAN hire and support local workers, thereby improving the local economic base and put itself in a position to contribute/give to the local community. Let's look at the whole idea of "local" businesses in this bleak time of global economic downturn. Local is GOOD and this local business's objective is to provide healthy food without the environmental downside of massive energy/transportation costs of bringing in food from farther away. Also, let's consider the health benefits to consumers having access to a high quality product with owner accountability as opposed to buying food from an anonymous corporation. I guess I am asking all of us to think a bit more broadly. One thing this economy needs is all of us supporting the smaller, more localized ways of creating viable businesses that will in the end create more jobs and healthier, "small business" models.
I for one would be more apt to donate if I knew where in Bed-Stuy the place is located. Bed-Stuy is one of the largest neighborhoods in Brooklyn, if not the entire city, and if the lace is located near me I would definitely be more likely to donate. Why so secretive. For now, I will wait to find out more information.
The breads and the brownies (triple chocolate) are amazing. The City has stopped the bus route which passes by Brooklyn Flea where I get the bread. Worth the mile walk in each direction.
Majo, believe me, I'd love to try some! I really love sourdough bread, both baking and eating it. :-) I'm originally from Germany, now living in Norway. The bread here is nothing to brag about and until a few years ago sourdough was practically unknown in Norway, they only used commercial yeast to bake bread. I was used to sourdough bread from Germany, so I had to start making my own and I fell in love with the process. It's so much fun making and trying different starters. Very rewarding :-) So I can relate to Matt and I know he will succeed. People recognize the love in his food.
Barbara, I hope you get a chance to try something from SCRATCHbread. You can taste that love and sincerity in every bite. It's like nothing you've ever had!
Good luck, Matt!
Hi Matt, though I never tasted or even smelled your bread, I back your cause just because of the love and sincerity that you pour into this project. I think that is what makes your products great and I can feel it in the website and the video as well. Keep doing what you came here for. It's absolutely inspiring and a wonderful gift to the world, well worth supporting :-) Barbara
the bread is great but considering many folks are unemployed, homeless and hungry, i find this campaign to raise money really gross. unless you do your part like donating bread to kitchens or meals on wheels please..raise it yourself.
