¿Por qué Hugo Martínez?
Hello Burbuja backers!
It's only Day 1 of our Kickstarter campaign, and Sonic Trace already feels the love.
Hugo, and his partner Christin have been hard at work building and designing La Burbuja. This means that for three weeks, they have been moving forward with this project regardless of the funds raised. We'll be sending updates from time to time to let you know how the process is going.
For our first update, we wanted to share with you Hugo's first exchange with Sonic Trace. At the time, we had no idea that the person behind that email, would become the person behind La Burbuja - Sonic Trace's portable recording booth.
Thanks for you support. And thanks for spreading the word.
Anayansi, Eric and the Sonic Trace team!
From Hugo Martínez, May 31, 2012:
While driving through LA and listening to KCRW I got to hear about Sonic Trace and the design challenge. I was intrigued with the project's intent, its deep cultural context it will ultimately be born from and exist in. But most of all, I was inspired.
Yo soy Hugo Martinez, y soy un inmigrante. I immigrated to this country illegally at the age of twelve from Michoacan, Mexico. Now I am 33 years old and when presented with these questions ¿Por qué te fuiste? ¿Por qué te quedaste? ¿Por qué regresaste? I reflect on them at a very personal level and ask myself how I got to the present stage of my life. I think of my trajectory from the point of view of an immigrant. I think of all the life experiences that have shaped me to who I am now; as well as how I evolved in this country. I think of all what was gained and what was lost along the way trying to make a dream a reality. My dream and now my passion: Architecture.
I now hold a masters degree in architecture and find myself moving forward to the next stage of uncertainty. I am now in uncertain times trying to start my own design and builder's studio. I am a designer. I am a builder. I am an Architect. So is my design partner Christin To. Christin is an immigrant from a Chinese and German background. So, we are ecstatic to become intimately involved with a project that has fused into our future. Contributing to the diversity of whom we are as immigrants striving to succeed in what has become our new home.
The Sonic Trace design competition presents a unique set of challenges for us. It is a perfect fit based on our historical background and what we are trying to achieve now. It has become a personal challenge to design not only a sound booth, but a space that is able to capture the essence of what it is to be an immigrant. To express a feeling in Form. To materialize a space that transcends borders and allows the individuality of a story to be born and resonated through space and time. To encapsulate a distorted reality that an immigrant lives in from day one and that feeling of a displacement from what we remember as home and that which is our own and gives us a sense of place.
