A film about two vagabonds eking out a marginal, madcap existence by looting off-season vacation homes in the Catskills.
DOOMSDAYS stars Bishop Allen frontman Justin Rice (Mutual Appreciation, Alexander the Last) as one of two doomsday-obsessed vagabonds who eke out a marginal, madcap existence looting off-season vacation homes in the Catskills. Their commitment to the lifestyle is challenged, however, when they admit a runaway boy and an aimless young woman to their ranks.
The idea for DOOMSDAYS came to writer/director Eddie Mullins after watching some documentaries and reading several non-fiction works all of which insisted that the modern world is on the verge of collapsing. Whether it be from peak oil, climate change, or natural disaster, something was ostensibly going to do us all in and soon. Of course, these dire predictions didn’t stop him from getting up and going to work every day, but they did get him thinking. What if someone was so thoroughly convinced that the world was truly ending any minute now that they gave up on it? Dropped out?
And so the story of Dirty Fred and Bruho was born, and what started out as a meditation on societal collapse gradually morphed into a buddy picture that at times reads more like The Blues Brothers than The Road. Call it an "apocalyptic comedy."
DOOMSDAYS is a very modestly budgeted film by Hollywood standards, but still costs a significant ammount of $, and our team would greatly appreciate your support in bringing it to the screen. Our core creative personnel (Producer, Cinematographer, Production Designer, Costume Designer, etc.) are in place, but we need funds to get the cameras rolling and see us through post-production. A donation at any level is greatly appreciated, and we've got some great premiums in the offing as well. You can also help by spreading the word! Please find us on Facebook!
DOOMSDAYS will shoot in April of 2012, and marks Eddie Mullins's feature film debut. The production’s home base will be Kingston, New York and the Catskill surrounds. Much like the film’s vagabond heroes, cast and crew will traipse all over the Hudson Valley, capitalizing on its natural beauty along the way. The production is very fortunate to have many friends and neighbors in the area who’ve generously offered up their homes as locations. We are equally fortunate to have Justin Rice, who calls Kingston home, signed on as composer and producer of our soundtrack.
DOOMSDAYS will be shot with an intimate crew mixing rising and seasoned professionals. The look of the picture will be a departure from today’s obligatory a-cut-every-second editing style, instead emphasizing deep focus photography and complex staging of actors. Inspirations for the film include (but are in no way limited to!) Monte Hellman’s Two-Lane Blacktop, Jim Jarmusch’s Down By Law, William Wyler’s The Little Foxes, and just about everything by Mizoguchi.
