UPDATE: January 11, 2011 - GOAL REACHED BUT PLEASE KEEP GIVING!

Fantastic news everyone, we've reached our $20,000 goal in just 21 days but we still need more help! The outpouring of support has been truly remarkable and we are extremely grateful for everyone’s generosity. We feel very fortunate to have so many people join us in making our film project a reality, thank you all so much.

We still have three weeks left before our Kickstarter campaign ends and we hope that people will still continue to become backers. Our original $20,000 goal was just an arbitrary minimum we established to make sure we didn’t shoot too high and risk getting nothing. (That’s just the way Kickstarter operates.) But the reality of the situation is that we can use double or even triple that amount! Filmmaking is an expensive endeavor and unfortunately the quality of a film is often times limited by the amount of money one can put into it.

By continuing to back our project, we will be able to hold more screenings all over the country, enter more film festivals, interview another round of people we weren’t able to fit in initially, and be able to distribute and promote this film in a more effective manner.

So please keep spreading the word about our project. Let people know that we are offering some cool rewards for pledging, such as signed DVDs, movie posters, ringtones, tickets to screenings and more!

Thanks for your continued support.

Martin and Jenö

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: December 21, 2010

Thank you for considering lending a hand with our film project. We are in the midst of producing a documentary about the early days of the San Francisco rave scene and the powerful influence those times had on countless people’s lives. We invite you to join our family in making an important film about a magical period of San Francisco’s history.

Our Film:

San Francisco was the epicenter of the American rave scene and witnessed some legendary events that began in the early ‘90s. These all-night electronic-music dance parties attracted a diverse cross-section of people. Culturally iconic and socially important, the parties became a catalyst in the lives of so many of the people who experienced them.

By weaving together interviews shot at previous locations where these parties took place with archival footage, contemporary B-Roll and time-lapse photography, we are creating a deep and poetic film that examines the do-it-yourself mentality and psychedelic community spirit that the San Francisco Bay Area rave scene epitomized. We believe that the subject matter is as socially and culturally significant today as it was almost 20 years ago, making for a fascinating story that will resonate with a broad global audience.

Whilst there have already been films produced about DJs and rave culture, there has never been a film that has tried to capture the psychedelic, artistic, and communal nature that the full-moon parties sparked during the pioneering days of the San Francisco rave scene. The early '90s was a magical time of musical creation and renegade promotion that will surely make for an engaging, entertaining, and informative film. Whether you were/are part of the scene or simply reviewing Kickstarter in hopes of finding a project to fund, we hope that you too will be energized and inspired to become part of our film.

Our Progress:

We began discussing the need to capture this story on film many years ago but it wasn’t until this past spring that the project began in earnest. Much of the filming occurred over the summer and our travels took us to beaches, festivals, nightclubs, and warehouses all over the Bay Area. We’ve interviewed DJs, music producers, party promoters, visual artists, and record-store owners, as well as plenty of folks who participated at the parties and had their lives impacted by what they experienced.

Beginning in the fall we returned back to our studio in Emeryville, CA (just across the bay from San Francisco). Currently, we are deep into the editing process as we attempt to stitch together a story that will resonate with both people who are intimately aware that these parties existed, as well as the uninitiated who simply enjoy a good documentary.

Our Need:

While we already have funding to pay for a majority of the production costs, we are still in need of more money in order to get us through post-production as well as promotion and distribution. So as you can imagine, we are still looking to raise a fair bit of money. We’ve established a goal of $20,000 for our Kickstarter campaign, but if we go over this amount (which we hope will happen), rest assured there are plenty of places to spend it. We hope you decide to help us complete a film that will be an inspiring story to so many.
