About this project

Creating a handmade portfolio book of 20 fine art images has been a bucket list item for awhile. When this portfolio is finished it will include a new signature series of images that will be created and transferred to the paper made in the studio. The images will be transferred or direct printed onto handmade paper using a variety of transfer and printing techniques. The original paintings were all mixed media, most of them pigment and oil.

All of the paper that the images will be transferred to or printed on will be made in my studio using a variety of pulp types . The primary sheets will be cotton or linen that is debossed in the paper-making process. The slip sheets will also be hand pulled using a modified Japanese sheet forming method.

While one can get a variety of beautiful handmade papers from various artist I wanted to have full creative control of the pulp as well as any type of embossing or water marks that is done on the paper.

As I am not a skilled bookbinder at this time I will take the paper and images I have created and have them bound using a skilled artisan. I will use a pinch leather cover.

The size of the project is much more that I can do processing pulp in a blender. The funds generated will be used to purchase a machine called a hollander beater. The hollander beater can process the quantity of pulp needed, the beater also beats the pulp as opposed to cutting it which yields a much higher quality paper.  The majority of the funds for the beater are in place as are the other tools and equipment required for the creation of the pieces.

  • We will fulfill all of the pledge gifts within 30 days of notification that our project pledge goal was met.

  • No, the gifts we will be giving for your generous pledges are prints not originals. Some are open edition prints, some are limited edition prints and the highest dollar pledge will be getting an Artist Proof.

  • An open edition print is a print that has no limit on the number of prints available and generally are not signed or numbered. Our open edition prints for this project will be signed.

Last updated: Friday Aug 12, 6:18pm EDT
  • A limited edition print is a print that has a certain number of prints in a specific size on a specific substrate. For example our Limited Edition Signature Series print on handmade paper is limited to an edition of 100. No more than 100 prints of each of this series on handmade paper will be printed.

  • I am using the term "Artist Proof" loosely. Here is what Wikipedia says about artist proofs.

    ----------

"An artist's proof is, at least in theory, an impression of a print taken in the printmaking process to see the current printing state of a plate while the plate (or stone, or woodblock...) is being worked on by the artist. A proof may show a clearly incomplete image, often called a working proof or trial impression, but in modern practice is usually used to describe an impression of the finished work that is identical to the numbered copies.[1] There can also be printer's proofs which are taken for the printer to see how the image is printing, or are final impressions the printer is allowed to keep; but normally the term "artist's proof" would cover both cases.

Artist's proofs are not included in the count of a limited edition, and sometimes the number of artist's proofs, which belong to the artist, can be surprisingly high at twenty or more. By convention, the artist is not supposed to sell these all at one time.

    -----

So what I am talking about with our artist proofs is that they are 5 signature series prints that will be hand embellished by me. The only way they differ from the limited edition prints is the embellishment.

  • To give you the background these original paintings are mixed media. in most cases the originals are pigment and oil a very few cases the originals were pigment and acrylic. The pledge gifts again are all prints.

  • Yep. In the spirit of Kickstarter I am referring to pledges when I talk about donations in my video. I mistakenly called it a  donation which is not accurate. A donation is where one would give money to support something they are passionate about and getting nothing in return. The beauty of Kickstarter is that it is based on a pledge system. We get to support some wonderfully creative projects and people that we are passionate about but we get a reward of some type in return for our pledge. How cool is that?
