A private detective racing the clock to solve a murder is dosed with LSD

BLOTTER

Blotter: (n.) The daily written record of events (as arrests) in a police station.

Blotter Acid: (n.) a semisynthetic psychedelic drug; well known for its psychological effects which can include altered thinking processes, closed and open eye visuals, synesthesia, an altered sense of time and spiritual experiences. Commonly distributed on absorbent blotter paper.

Description

"Detective Jack Anderson is a private eye living the life of an old fashioned pulp film noir  character living in modern day Philadelphia. He drinks hard, but takes his job incredibly seriously, working outside the law, taking cases the police ignore. While on the trail of a potential serial killer, he receives evidence that a victim is being held hostage and it's up to him to solve the case before another life is lost. But what he doesn't expect is that someone has 'slipped him a mickey' - in the form of LSD. But by who? Why? Does he move forward with the investigation? How can he solve a case when his very perceptions of reality are being torn apart by drugs?"

Purpose

Blotter was originally an idea based around my love for the dark tones of film noir and imagining the juxtaposition of that style with bright, wild imagery. With that in mind, the story evolved into an exploration of the psychedelic experience when held up to tropes and cliches of the film noir "genre" trying to exist in real life.

Soundtrack

After much pondering what kind of music would best suit a movie as unusual as this one, I decided on obtaining the rights to a relatively obscure 2011 Flaming Lips release, "I Found a Star on the Ground", a six-hour psychedelic song. The tempo and soundscapes within this song would work perfectly with the imagery I am trying to project. I have had a limited interaction with members of the band through Twitter, [when I had a vague idea for a music video for the song, frontman Wayne Coyne messaged me "You should do it!!!!" and Steven Drozd asked "Can I lip synch in it?"] but ideally I would like to get the rights to the song to avoid lawsuits in the event that "permission" doesn't hold up.

What this Page is For

The script is complete, and thankfully we have plenty of technical equipment to get this movie made [HD cameras, external mics, dollys, computer software, etc], but to truly make this vision happen it's going to take a little help. A lot of my friends have expressed interest in this project, in taking part in either cast or crew for little to no pay, which is really unbelievable, considering the talent that these people put forth in their work. Now I'm used to working on a zero dollar budget, and in the film world my end goal would be considered extremely low-budget, but with the experience I have, you can rest assured that every penny of it will better the movie.

Some of the money will be going to props and costumes to help build this "world". A portion of it will be going to feeding my cast and crew, because really, its the least I can do. And some of the money would be going to usage rights for IFASOTG, if obtained. I'm sure other expenses will arise, and being a college student isn't exactly the position for covering these things on my own, so please please please do what you can to help out and hey, get some cool rewards for doing it!

FAQ

  • $1200 is a very high budget compared to what I am used to working with, so I can assure you every cent will be used wisely. $1200 is the MINIMUM amount I will be able to do this comfortably on, and securing the rights to IFASOTG is kind of a side "hey what if I was able to do that? why not give it a try?" sort of thing. Ideally, I would like to receive more than the set goal, but for now, let's just try to reach that, okay?

  • I've gotten some very legitimate questions about the video. The video is in no way indicative of what the final project will be like. As one Redditor pointed out, I should have utilized the equipment I will be using for the project. However, I did not have those things on hand. I was just trying to make a quick explanation video so people knew what was up...be friendly etc. Blotter will NOT be in B&W, rather it will be quite vibrantly colored. The black and white filter was simply for the page and to give it a "noir-y" feel. I do, in fact know quite a bit about the "genre", so rest assured, the film will be a LOT better.
