Documenting the creation of a unique urban mural in West Oakland, CA
Help us finish Eighth Street, an inspiring short documentary following the creation of a unique urban mural in Oakland, CA.
Oakland, CA - hip hop, urban culture, and street art in a vibrant California city, The Town is home to interesting and powerful characters. Dave Young Kim is one of them, and his unique talents as a visual artist are aimed squarely at improving the lives of our community. During the course of this project, Oakland will be getting a bit more interesting and I'm looking for a few bold contributors to help me document the change.
The change, in this case, is the creation of an urban mural depicting the early 20th century history of once-jazzy West Oakland.
My objective with Eighth Street is to tell the story of a small happening that is both inner-city and positive. Despite Oakland's difficulties - as a city, we rarely make national news in a positive light - there are good things happening here, and this is one important clip that deserves broadcast.
Dave Young Kim is a mixed media artist with a background both in L.A. street writing and studio fine art. He brings both worlds together in his work, both on canvas and on walls around Oakland. His studio is located in West Oakland.
Eighth Street is a short documentary film made using visually-striking 35mm cinematography. I plan to continue to use a mixed-media approach to communicate the blended reality of Oakland's art, culture, and optimism.
Our soundtrack will be authentic and from the streets. Part of the budget from you will go directly to commissioning original music from local artists.
The finished film will be a short, well-crafted piece following the inception and creation of a 35-foot-wide mural depicting the history of West Oakland. Location interview content with the artist will be included, as well as time lapse sequences of the mural being realized and unique B-roll footage the surrounding community and city of Oakland.
The video included on this page is a preview of the current cut of Chapter One and includes my initial interviews with the artist and several examples of his work, both around town and on canvas. It offers a good example of the aesthetic and design I intend for the finished piece, though there is work left to be done! I need your partnership to fund this project and finish the film!
Here's my plan for finishing Eighth Street:
Chapter One will be given an opening sequence and a few editing tweaks.
Chapter Two will be a hip-hop-driven visual exploration of West Oakland with location interview material leading into the creation of the mural. Our budget includes commissioning the audio track and cost of producing the footage.
Chapter Three will depict the finished mural, explore community reaction, and conclude with material from a followup interview with the artist.
Once complete, Eighth Street will be made available through vimeo.com and be screened locally in homes, churches, and community centers in Oakland CA. It will be an inspiring and interesting short film.

I intend for Eighth Street to be the first of several stories exploring the intersections of urban life, religion, and art in Oakland, CA. Future projects will track musicians, artists, authors, and public figures. As materials are assembled, the eventual product will take shape as a feature-length documentary that explores, in multifaceted, intertwining threads, the unique themes of modern urban life, creativity, and faith.
Eight Street will be produced and directed by Matt Beardsley, Oakland-based videographer and editorial photographer. Videographer and documentary photographer Steve Babuljak has signed on as sound recordist and second camera.
Our budget, as listed on this page, reflects my desire to create a high-quality production with the best talent and technique in audio, soundtrack licensing, editing, and color grading. Your financial support is immeasurably appreciated!
