HEAR NOW… is a festival that features the very personal and impossible to categorize chamber music of contemporary LA composers.

                                               HEAR NOW…

A Festival of New Music by Contemporary Los Angeles Composers

HEAR NOW is raising funds to finance two concerts featuring chamber music works by contemporary Los Angeles composers, including Thomas Ades, William Kraft, Donald Crockett, Don Davis, and others.

Concert 1 will take place on Saturday, August 25th, at 8 pm at The First Lutheran Church of Venice, 815 Venice Blvd., Venice, CA 90291. Concert 2 will take place on Sunday, August 26th, at 4 pm at The First Lutheran Church of Venice.

WHAT IS 'HEAR NOW'?

Los Angeles is known as a center of film music, but Los Angeles is also a place where composers are hearing and writing very personal, idiosyncratic, impossible to categorize forms of concert music. HEAR NOW… is a festival that will feature these composers and their chamber music.

HOW DID IT START?

The concept when it was initially conceived was ‘here now gone tomorrow’. Tim Loo and Hugh Levick had been talking about it for a couple years. Let’s hear what’s here now before it’s gone tomorrow. And they knew there was a lot here. Many Los Angeles composers were writing wonderful music and much of it was rarely being heard.

HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?

Artistic director, Hugh Levick, and a panel made up of The Lyris Quartet, Bill Kraft, and Gernot Wolfgang invite composers’ submissions and create the programs for the concerts.

WHEN WILL IT HAPPEN?

Saturday, August 25th, Sunday, August 26th, 2012

WHO ARE THE PERFORMERS?

The musicians for HEAR NOW 2012 will be drawn from LA's world-class talent: for instance: The Lyris String Quartet, The Calder Quartet, The Eclipse Quartet, cellist John Walz, violinist Tereza Stanislav; pianists Vicki Ray, Gloria Cheng, Aron Kallay, Mark Robson, Joanne Pearce Martin; wind players Eric Jacobs, Stuart Clark, Leslie Reed, Sara Andon, Pamela Vliek-Martchev, Judith Farmer; harpist, Marcia Dickstein; percussionist, Ted Atkatz; soprano Rebecca Tomlinson; conductor, Elizabeth Wright; and others.

BREAKING NEWS!!

We are excited to announce that Thomas Ades' piano solo, CONCERT ON A PARAPHRASE FROM POWDER HER FACE will be performed by pianist extrordinaire Mark Robson, and that one of the greatest Los Angeles pianists, Gloria Cheng, will perform Gernot Wolfgang's STILL WATERS!

HOW DID IT GO IN 2011?

From Russell Steinberg’s blog: “The assembly of forces was impressive: 45 of the best players in LA presented the works of 14 composers on two separate concerts, afternoon and evening. For another thing, the performances glowed with technical and musical command of the highest order. These concerts were not the typical rush job just getting through the music respectably. These were true interpretations, labors of love that clearly were the result of many rehearsals— the way we expect musicians to perform Chopin or Brahms. It made a difference. There was an electricity and intentionality in each piece often missing in contemporary music concerts, even by the top groups in town.”

Audience Members:

“Thank you for assembling such a remarkable and varied group of compositions and fine musicians to perform the works....It was an extraordinary experience to be gathered in that beautiful church for a second time and go on another musical adventure. May HEAR NOW continue to be an annual event.”

“a wonderful night of sharing your deep commitment to the art of new music”

“This is the start of something big.   Congrats on all counts!”
