People discuss a word.
NIGGER (aka "the documentary facebook rejected"), a feature documentary film where people discuss a word.
Reviews of the film:
"St.Omer takes on the many-shaded malignancy of that word in her masterful documentary, Nigger." -- Nancy Keefe Rhodes. Women Film Critics Circle.
"I thought Nigger was challenging and well-handled and especially in today's sociopolitical comment, a film worth viewing." -- Anonymous Juror. Cleveland International Film Festival
"What’s in a word? Everything. Lest anyone think race need not be discussed and unpacked, see St.Omer’s documentary, Nigger." -- Doug Biklen. Dean, School of Education, Syracuse University.
A note from the director:
Dear All,
Whether we came to this land as new immigrants, or have a family tree with roots deeply embedded in this soil we, as Americans, now share a history -- and the word "nigger" factors rather prominently within it.
Thank you so much for your time and interest in our feature documentary film, Nigger, where people discuss a most loaded word. Despite being the film I've worked on the longest and that financed as I typically finance my ultra no-budget films, principally through heart, sinew, tears and sweat (literally), Nigger has been my most uncelebrated work to date. While it has received some favorable independent reviews, over the years it has been rejected by all film festivals to which we've applied and largely shunned by institutional screening venues... And so we call on you!
We intend to rent a small, independent movie theatre in New York City and to show the film for a two-week, self-financed theatrical run. We seek $34K to do this, and I personally (and very warmly) invite you to join our ultra grass-roots campaign to bring Nigger to the big screen.
Any amount that you can contribute (from $1) will be appreciated. If you can't contribute monetarily, please help us spread The Word! Thank you so much for your interest in our feature documentary film!
sincerely,
thea
THE WHAT, WHY, WHERE, WHEN & HOW ABOUT THE FILM:
What?
Nigger, a feature documentary film where people discuss a word.
Why?
For a lot of reasons -- one of them being that we are interested in words and their meanings. So, we're particulary interested in a word with such loaded meanings as "nigger" -- a word that, in this day and age, with all this talk about the first amendment and freedom of speech, is still so hugely censored.
Where and When?
We aim to premiere Nigger in New York City by end 2012 or early 2013.
How?
With your much needed (and greatly appreciated) financial help!
How can you make a pledge and receive a reward?
Please review our pledge categories to the right, select which, if any, you wish to make, click on it, and follow the prompts. When our funding goal is met, we'll email you a survey requesting a mailing address so that we can send you your tangible rewards by their listed due dates.
(You'll have our heartfelt thanks already, from the moment that you pledge)!
What is Kickstarter and how does it work?
Through Kickstarter, a way for the public to fund creative projects, you make a donation and receive a reward. Kickstarter is ALL or NOTHING - meaning that if we do not meet our full goal of $34,000 by our deadline of August 6th, your credit cards will not be charged and we will receive None of the money pledged towards our film.
What is the specific cost breakdown of the $34K?
Certain movie theaters in Manhattan enable independent filmmakers to screen their films publicly by renting the theater for a short time. One quotes a one-week run packaged deal at a cost of $11K. We're aiming for two weeks ($22K) and have added to this cost that of our kickstarter related reward materials, mailings, and service fees ($5K), and two small Ads (The NYT = $4722, The Village Voice = $1349). Total = $33,071
