A Note from Fellow Adventurer/Co-Founder of Atlas Obscura, Dylan Thuras
Jessica and I go back to 2008, when we met and immediately bonded over being mutually jealous of each other’s travels. Hearing about the year (!) she spent in the Arctic, I agreed that I needed to take a trip there myself . I decided to designate myself a field agent for the Atlas Obscura, and bring our audience of curious travelers along.
Jessica will be leading myself, my wife, and the Atlas Obscura audience (via blog posts, photos and videos) on an expedition to the remote locations she visited while filming. We’ll be taking overnight trains, hiking, herding reindeer, and soaking in the reality that Jessica captured so intensely in her film.
Though the trip we’re planning is somewhat similar to the one Jessica will be organizing for donors who give 10K to her Kickstarter campaign, it will be much less luxurious. We’ll be living just like Jessica did when she was filming – no heat, no hot water, lots of fire building and sauna-ing, and lots of time to simply explore this crazy beautiful place. We’ll be bringing back a ton of material for the Atlas as well, and maybe some tidbits for a few other projects…
The area we are traveling in is a unbelievably beautiful corner of the Arctic, and her film Aatsinki is the next best thing to actually visiting this remote location. Though she has already reached her Kickstarter goal, she still has just 24 hours left to raise additional funds, all of which will go toward making Aatsinki even more amazing.
