Readers made my last novel, Someone Else's Fairytale, a solid success. Help me get a Kirkus Indie review for my next project.

That video is my first ever attempt at creating a book trailer, so it's far from perfect.

I began my chick lit career as a small press author for Covenant Communications. Since going indie, my wonderful fans have enabled me to make more money, have more creative control, and maintain a much stronger personal connection with readers. My last book, Someone Else's Fairytale, has been as high as 194th (that I am aware) on Amazon.

For my next project, a YA book called, Castles on the Sand, I'd like to get a Kirkus Indie review. Kirkus is one of the most well respected names in book reviewing, and they way they control the number of indie authors who are eligible for review is to charge a hefty price. As I still live in a one bedroom apartment on a very small income from my husband's student stipend, I'll need backer help to be able to afford this on top of all the other costs associated with producing a quality book (copyediting, cover design, etc.) In order to make my mid-August release date, I'll need an expedited review, which costs $575.00. I set this campaign for the closest round number - the cost of paperbacks for rewards and other fees will eat away at the total somewhat, but I will be able to cover any shortfall. Feel free to overfund, though! Any additional amounts will go towards cover design and editing fees. To learn more about Kirkus Indie reviews, see here

I finished writing this book just as I hit launch on this campaign. The book will be out to my usual beta readers, edited, and then sent back out for copyedits while this campaign is running. At the close of the campaign, it will be ready to go to Kirkus. This is a tried and true production schedule, set by three books' worth of experience.

You can learn more about on my YA/chick lit novels at www.emtippetts.com. Note that I only update that site when I have something concrete to offer, such as the release of a new book, so please do sign up for updates, secure in the knowledge you won't be spammed. For people who want to hear more of my exhausted babblings about maintaining two writing careers with two small children, there is my other blog, www.emilymah.com.

FAQ

  • Very good point. The books will be printed in the US, so an international backer is someone outside the US. I'll endeavor to get books to non-US residents as fast as possible, but there may be some delays there.

  • My built in mic on my little netbook works. And I used the broken mic jack on my desktop (which my World of Warcraft guildmates can attest to) as an excuse, because I really don't like being on camera. (Have I said that enough times yet? ;-)

  • I've gotten a few messages about this one. Although I'm currently in the UK most of the time, I am a US citizen living here on a temporary visa. Therefore, I have a US tax ID and am a resident for purposes of voting, etc. As far as I know, Kickstarter isn't currently available to anyone without a US tax ID. However, I think you can do a very similar campaign style fundraising event using PayPal and a "donate" button.
