Instacube Announces Facebook Integration
Hey Everyone!
So... you have all been throwing out some great suggestions and we have been listening. Our team of engineers and designers have been working hard to explore the addition of Facebook photos to Instacube and we have deemed it doable!
So here is your next stretch goal: If we hit $500K, we will integrate Facebook Photos!
This is HUGE news! This won't interfere with the purity of your Instagram experience on Instacube, but rather will compliment it -- allowing you to stream photos from your friends and family all over the globe.
Spread the word and let's keep making Instacube even more incredible!
Cheers,
Team Instacube

I think I will just hack the OS and then upload my own feed streams, also make them stitch the feeds together seamlessly, then I don't have to press a button. Can't wait :)

Opps phone being stupid, sorry for double post
Creator Paco Mak on September 8, 2012
This is very interesting. However, I have a question. Photos on fb are mostly non-square, will the photos become funny shape or weird centred or having black boarder on the sides (i guess that's the best way to show the whole photo?)?
Anyhow I am getting more and more excited. :)

@Beagle: I'm certain D2M does not see the 2,800 backers as a committee through which to get creative and development ideas. Nothing would get done. Also, remember, the funding is crow sourced, not the design. I'm certain what D2M meant when they said, essentially, that they view this as everyone's project is that they are the team and we are the fans. This is not unlike a sports team. As a fan, you feel emotionally invested (an even financially, through tickets, merch, etc.), but that invesent does not mean you get to call the plays. Sorry you feel I've been personally offensive, but I find your continued effort to turn this KS into a crowd source design project (versus crowd source funding) irritating. Also, your snarky tone really got under my skin. Anyway, the project will be what the project will be. Let's both just be happy to be a part of what looks to be a successful launch of a great device.
Creator Alexander Q on September 8, 2012
I think a "Save to Device" or "Buffered Feed" would be great for sideshows without a wifi connection.
The cube could be left on the registration table at any party, showing photos of the guest(s) of honor.
Maybe a mix of the 2, where saved photos could be shuffled into an hash tagged feed, or being able to loop a hash tag. Something that ensures a dynamic, ever changing sideshow, and that earlier photos of the event aren't missed.
Creator Alexander Q on September 8, 2012
I heartily agree with the requests for a higher resolution screen. I value that above FB integration, especially since resolution is becoming a competing factor among new digital devices (ie: kindle fire HD push to compete with retina iPad).
Creator Bear Cruz on September 8, 2012
loving the white color with the silver trim! Great colors!
Creator Beagle on September 8, 2012
@tyjack - a sensible suggestion and a good idea for implementing further 'integration', after all there are a multitude of wishes out there.
Creator Beagle on September 8, 2012
@chuck
As a backer, I'm perfectly entitled to my point, which was made clearly and without becoming personally offensive, unlike you. You communicate as though you and only you are right. Please don't do that it's unnecessary. If D2M believe we are having a conversation about functionality then let us have one before decisions are made.
Creator Luciano Cossi on September 8, 2012
Thanks for being fluid on your project. I think this really will make it a unique, custom product. I would be so disappointed that it was already dated when I receive my order. Thanks for keeping an open mind and being so willing to be flexible and creative!
Creator tyjak on September 8, 2012
Vote for a better screen resolution, that is more important than Facebook integration IMO !
Creator Aric Giron on September 8, 2012
this is really awesome! i got in at early adopter but it wish i got the lovers pair instead...or too even :)
Creator Bas Hendriks on September 8, 2012
Hi.
I'm really pleased with the facebook upgrade. Because of the higher resolution of The facebook photo's i really like The sugestion of upgading the screen to a lager resolution. Even a smallisch upgrade to 800x800 would ge fantastic.
On most KS projects an open API is frequently seen. I woult be please to see that you are reconcidering in regard to this. Opening up the API gives developpers the chance to create functions that even surpasses your wildest ideas. IT even gives jou The opportunity to awnser all requests for supporting function X with 'You dan build that'.
Creator Vincent Van on September 8, 2012
i like it integrate with FB but no twitter (not alot ppl has twitter including mine).
Creator D2M | Design to Matter on September 7, 2012
Thanks for all the support everyone. To verify again, Facebook will be optional- not a required feed at all :). @Chuck uses a great example- his wife's friends have great photos on facebook, and he loves Instagram- they can transition between feeds seamlessly.
@Dean is right- we're looking ahead, and realizing supporting both platforms is the best way to ensure the instagram experience is preserved for all :). Again, Facebook , like SmartThings are optional additions- Instacube will come ready for Instagram.
@Siruba & @Greg- stay tuned, we're looking into it.
@Beagle- we've been listening the whole time- we keep announcements a surprise, but we factor in every email and post we receive to determine our next course of action- we care, and we appreciate the feedback.
@Chuck, thanks for understanding where we're coming from.
Creator Chuck Marshall on September 7, 2012
Beagle: Do you practice being boorish, or is it just innate? Backer and develops have a different role here. The stretch goal is often referred to as one "for" backers (i.e., the "your" from yoru earlier post), because it results in an added feature or some additional item or development. Here, that added feature is optional FB integration. Perhaps you don't like the feature (despite the fact that you never need turn it on) and would not have included it if you were the developer, but therein lies the issue. You are not the developer. You are the backer. While the developer may appreciate your input, I'm not sure you've actually given the developer any input that can be used.
Please don't let your unexpected hostility taint what has been an otherwise civil KS project. Your pendantic observations do not serve any function in advancing the forum here, nor do they offer any thing constructive the developers may use to make the experience better.
Creator siruba on September 7, 2012
Can this be a reason to upgrade the display from 600x600? Facebook images do have higher resolutions (?).
Creator Beagle on September 7, 2012
@D2M "we like to think we're all in this together- our team & the backers on a development journey."
I take it then further decisions will be made with our ability to comment in advance.
Creator Dean L on September 7, 2012
Considering Facebook has purchased Instagram, I think Instacube is just future proofing their product.
Creator Suguru Nishioka on September 7, 2012
Many (tho not all) Instagram lovers are somewhat anti-facebook or at least refraining from using FB as photo sharing site so I think the reaction will be mixed. But hey the user can opt out of using facebook part right? I guess there is no harm done.
Creator CK on September 7, 2012
Great news! Nowadays, getting more and more people upload instagram photo to fb, this can also replace your current digital photo frame. After all, instagram is merging with Facebook now, you can say they are the same company, integration is unavoidable. Yes, instagram is more artistic, fb photo is more closer to daily life.
My current problem is what color should I choose:)
Creator Jovana Maniaci on September 7, 2012
I'm not at all excited about integrating with Facebook.
Creator Chuck Marshall on September 7, 2012
People complaining about Facebook seem to not understand the intergtaion. It is not a "you must now use Facebook" integration, but rather a "now you have choices, and Facebook is among them" integration. I, for one, welcome the FB integration, because my wife does not use Instagram, and her FB photo section is awesome. Also, the idea that Instagram is an "artistic" (a) broadly attributes a subjective quality to a user base that is decidedly point and shoot and (b) forgets that people have been taking beautiful pictures and storing them in places other than Instagram since the invention of photography.
Opinions on Instagram or FB aside, more choices is better. I'm not sure I understand the "don't lose yoru focus" conversation. The Instagram intergration is not technically difficult, and is probably already done. What focus is being lost by providing a second or third (or more) choices on a menu?
Creator Greg Hunter on September 7, 2012
If facebook is possible, why not other sites? Tumblr? Twitter?
Creator Maarten Kumpen on September 7, 2012
Please think twice about facebook, I like this project because it's NOT facebook.
I completely agree with Brandon Smith.
Creator D2M | Design to Matter on September 7, 2012
Thanks for the feedback everyone! To clarify:
- Facebook will be an option, not something you have to incorporate-if you want to keep your Instacube purely Instagram that will be super easy- we won't let this distract from our vision- which is liberating Instagram photos from your smartphone :). We figured since they're merging we should be able to support both :).
-Open API's require developer maintenance- we're releasing new features as we confirm we have the bandwidth to support an effortless and delightful experience for all :) We will keep you posted (we're certainly not moving in the opposite direction :)
@Beagle, we like to think we're all in this together- our team & the backers on a development journey.
Creator Brandon Smith on September 7, 2012
PLEASE make this optional. The whole reason I enjoy instagram is because it IS NOT facebook. Instagram is artistic and a view into the photographic world of those I follow. Facebook is a cluttered view into my friend's lives and not something I'm interested in displaying or viewing.
I beg you to reconsider, or easily allow one to NOT have to integrate with facebook.
Creator Beagle on September 7, 2012
Instagram IS Facebook surely. Hardly a surprise.
Flickr would be more surprising.
And isn't this YOUR stretch target, not ours?!
Creator Terry Gauchat on September 7, 2012
Can you please just provide a "very" open API so that developers can code modules to load photos from ANY desired source (e.g., Airplay, Picasa, Flickr, Pinterest, SDCard (remote mounted drive SMB)).
i.e., Is the API and or entire unit's software open? GPL even?
Creator Cat Woods on September 7, 2012
Hmmm not sure about this! Bought into the concept of just being instagram hope this doesn't affect the focus of the project ...
Creator Jon Ford on September 7, 2012
How about you skip Facebook AND Twitter. Seriously, F*CK Facebook. Product is more appealing without it, in my opinion.
Creator Andrew W Sprung on September 7, 2012
fantastic news! thank's for the consistent flow of updates on the project. very excited to get this guy!
Creator Matt Fischer on September 7, 2012
