This documentary project follows the journey of a Southern family impacted by HIV as they move from trauma to healing.
AIDS is a top Killer of Black Women who live in the U.S. South.
Advocates battle against it. Families struggle to live with it. Beyond governments and institutions, AIDS is a story about personal choices and the bonds of love that bind us.
Wilhemina Dixon’s family has been tried by AIDS. Her daughter, Toni, and a cousin, Chamalla, died of the disease last summer. Her granddaughter Dayshal was born HIV positive. Her nephew Bobby also lives with the disease. Our film tells the story of their love and charts their struggles within the South Carolina medical system. It's a system that's under trial itself, with as many as 4000 patients per doctor in a state where one out of every four persons is eligible for Medicaid.
South Carolina's governor, Nikki Haley, resists health care reform. She says the state "has great health care. What we need are jobs."
But the jobs the Dixon family hold don't come with health insurance. Without employer insurance, access to medical care is difficult. Sometimes they don't have gas, and at other times the car's in the shop.
This film follows what happens to the Dixon family as their lives intersect with an advocacy group called the South Carolina HIV/AIDS Council. It's the only group that goes into state prisons to work with heterosexual men; and the only one that runs a mobile testing van in outlying areas.
This story is untold and ignored. We have finished research, and want to begin primary production. Help us work to bring the story of this proud strong black family, battling the odds and winning, to screens by World AIDS Day: December 1, 2012.
