I will be producing a set of note cards from my unique artwork. I create surrealistic, highly rendered organic images, often incorporating elements of trompe-l’oeil (images that appear three dimensional). For this project I am working in black and white, using pen and artist’s pencil.

When I start my work, I start with loose, scribbling lines not trying to create any particular image. As I continue to work and look at the initial strokes I start seeing form emerge in what I’ve done and I start delineating more and the form becomes more well-defined. As I look at my drawing more images and forms appear and I say “Oh, THAT’S what that is!” and I continue to articulate the new form. As I work the form the trompe-l’oeil effect can emerge for me to build on. For example, the image appears to float off the page in the vicinity of the lizard and the snake’s head in Flower Pod.

The title of Winding Snake and Eggs reminds me of Green Eggs and Ham. The Winding Snake and Eggs image is, to me, very feminine. I see Fallopian forms in the flowers. And I really like the quality of the (two-headed) snake.  He almost disappears. I was going to add color to it and decided to leave it as a kind of ghost.

What I love most about my artwork is that it’s a process of discovery for me as the images more or less create themselves. The initial lines indicate what the form needs to be. Here are some additional examples of my work.
