CHAPEL FOR THE BETRAYED commemorates the deaths that would result from proposed anti-homosexuality legislation under consideration in Uganda.  The proposed penal code has been reintroduced after a highly contested initial proposal in 2009-10. Chapel for the Betrayed is an installation piece which includes versions of the proposed legislation, images and three-dimensional elements that attempt to reflect the impact and impetus behind a policy borne out of fear and hatred.

First shown in The Global Africa Project, at NYC’s Museum of Art and Design where it was the only work in that major exhibition about this evolving genocidal current in African culture. 

Support is being sought for the Chapel’s reinstallation as part of Pop-up—Philadelphia!, sponsored by Pop-Up Queer Museum* and the William Way Community Center** from April 21 until May 20, 2012. In addition your contribution will be used for the initial phases of the distribution of an artist book based upon Chapel for the Betrayed including copyright, ISBN registry, barcoding, proofing and limited review copies.

HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS: Kickstarter is a new way to fund creative ideas and ambitious endeavors. Powered by a unique all-or-nothing approach, projects must be fully funded or no money changes hands. In other words, if we don’t raise our initial goal of $3,000 we lose everything. And, by the way, our goal of $3,000 is the minimum I need to cover the cost of shipping, installation, dismantling and return to storage of the Chapel, as well as the cost of copyright, ISBN registry, barcoding, and proof and limited review copy publication

WHAT IF I DON'T REACH MY GOAL? If we don't reach our goal, all pledges are canceled and that's that. Your card is not charged. Of course we hope this doesn’t happen – those 21 days will fly by, so please donate today! And please also spread the word. Please know that I will use my own funds to keep the Chapel in circulation but my goal is not to burden the project or myself with debt that will impede the use of this work to bring attention to actions that will directly impact the lives and freedom of LGBTQ people.

*The Pop-Up Museum of Queer History is a grassroots organization that transforms spaces into temporary installations celebrating the rich, long, and largely unknown histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. We believe that our community – and especially our youth – deserve to know our history. If you don’t know you have a past, how can you believe you have a future?

The William Way Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center was formed in 1996, when a group of community leaders came together with the goal of creating a stronger, more stable community center out of Penguin Place, the community center at the time. 

** After an extensive search, the William Way Community Center purchased the former Engineers' Club of Philadelphia in March 1997. Soon after, renovations began, and the building opened to the public in July 1997. Since then, the Center has developed an array of programming and services that target LGBT groups, and community organizations have moved permanent offices into the Community Center. In addition, over 70 groups meet at the Community Center on a regular basis, and many more use the facility for special events. The building is open seven days a week and is currently used by over 2,500 people each month.
