WHO IS RICHARD CORMAN ? Richard Corman’s photography reveals the human spirit. Ken Burns (documentarian, producer and director) describes Richard’s work as having an “artistic vision dedicated to the highest aspirations of human endeavor....they record in big moments and small, among the famous and ordinary, the gifted and challenged, larger truths relevant to all of us.” As a portrait photographer, Corman has worked with a thrilling breadth of subjects from Nobel Peace Prize recipients (i.e., Nelson Mandela, James Dewey Watson) to varied artists before they reached stardom (Madonna, Keith Haring) to esteemed actors who are at the top of their profession (Robert De Niro, Paul Newman, Al Pacino) to elite athletes who inspire greatness (Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter, Muhammad Ali) to some of the best- loved musicians of our time (Sting, Wynton Marsalis, Jessye Norman), to writers that have left an indelible mark (Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Wolfe), to visual artists (Basquiat, Noguchi) these are just a few examples of the tremendous talents that Richard has had the honor of photographing. Richard’s body of work clearly reaches beyond the commercial and entertainment worlds. The continued diversity of his work can also be seen in the many socio-cultural projects and non-profit organizations he has been humbled to be involved with over the years. Most notably, is his beautiful work with the Special Olympics, a cause very close to his heart. Richard will be celebrating 20 years of traveling the world photographing the athletes of the Special Olympics in 2011. He has also found great fulfillment in his work with the Wounded Warrior Project, American Association for Cancer Research, Amnesty International, United Way, Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, ACLU, Christopher Reeve and Dana Reeve Foundation, March of Dimes and Muhammad Ali’s Parkinson’s Center. Richard, a native New Yorker, is inspired daily by the creative energy in New York City. Richard has a degree in Art History and Psychology from Hunter College. In addition, he spent 2 years apprenticing with Richard Avedon in the early 80’s, during which he assisted him on the American West project. That time continues to influence Richard’s work. He currently resides on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with his wife, Patricia and his son, William.
THE FILM : The film is about Richards life and work as a photographer, however it's told through the perspective of his subjects, family, and friends. It is not your typical documentary film, it's experimental, its philosophical, and its extremely engaging. It's not just about the photographs its about the human condition and what drives all of us to do what we do.
THE PLAN : The more people that have an opportunity to watch the film, the more impact it will have. Therefore our plan is to roll out to as many film festivals as possible and if the opportunity presents itself to find national airtime. The message is universal and it will touch people of all ages. To do what you love and to give back as much as possible; everyone can relate and its something that many of us are still striving for.
THE MONEY: The film has already taken over one year to shoot and the costs keep piling up. If we are able to raise the funds it will pay for all of our post production costs, editors fees, sound design, equipment, travel costs, and other incidentals. The money speeds up the process and allows me to professionally hire the resources that I need to have a film that is festival ready by years end.
