About this project
Vanishing of the Bees, a full-length documentary narrated by Oscar-nominated actress Ellen Page, follows two commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S. The film also features organic beekeepers Gunther Hauk, Dee Lusby, food activist and author Michael Pollan and leading scientists on the case such as Dennis van Engelsdorp. Covering the global scope of this story in America, Europe, Australia and Asia, this documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds about the relationship between mankind and Mother Earth.
Now that the film is complete, the filmmakers (Maryam Henein and George Langworthy) are launching their Bee the Change National campaign. This massive grass-roots campaign will: offer screenings across the country and around the world, offer an educational version and campus tour, promote honeybee health, and turn awareness into action.
Your contributions will help this film:
- raise awareness about the bees and their vital role in our ecology (i.e. we are organizing a strategy summit with NGOs, environmental groups, beekeeping associations, women's alliances)
- provide solutions to the public to improve bee health and better our environment (ie, we are starting initiatives and petitions to legalize beekeeping across the US)
- help create an educational version of the documentary (We are organizing a campus tour)
- build honeybee sanctuaries to preserve bee health
These are just some of the ways in which funds will help us. There are many more specifics that we are happy to discuss with anyone. Just send an email to info@vanishingbees.com
We are offering Ellen Page-autographed copies for those who donate $500 or more. We also are sponsored by a non profit called Save The Bee Foundation. So every penny is used to spread awareness and help these crucial pollinators! Join the Communal Hive.

Connected as Maryam Henein (1809 friends)
Maryam Henein is the founder of HoneyColony. I am also an investigative journalist and the director of the internationally acclaimed documentary Vanishing of the Bees, narrated by Oscar-nominated actress Ellen Page.
Making this film over the past five years stressed the fact that food – organic food - is sacred medicine and that our current agricultural landscape with it’s monocultures and poisonous chemicals is unsustainable. Health is our birthright, we just need access to the right information and food alternatives.
My path toward a holistic lifestyle started nine years ago, at the age of 29, when I stepped into a cross walk and was hit by a Ford Explorer at 35 miles an hour. The incident hurled my life along a transformational trajectory. Overnight I went from a young go-getting freelance journalist to a young woman with broken bones and a titanium rod in her leg.
Because of the trauma, I eventually developed food allergies and had to cut out dairy, wheat and sugar from my diet. Slowly, I witnessed my mood and periods improve and the fog lift from my mind. Curious, I began researching everything I could about the healing properties of plants, vitamins, minerals and super foods.
As I delved into the world of nutrition I realized that it is also filled with scams, bogus products, and hyped-up promises.
With HoneyColony my goal is to create a trusted resource to help people navigate through the plethora of alternatives on the market, both on the shelf and online.
