Chickens you say?
Have you seen what humans do to chickens? It is not pretty. Just ask Mabel. She is the first chicken resident at Deep Roots. When we found her, she was missing most of her feathers and a large portion of her skin. She was also severely dehydrated. We believe she fell off a transport truck on her way to a rendering factory. She was essentially considered trash.
Mabel has made a full recovery and now commands the love and respect of anyone who comes to the sanctuary (human and non-human). She is now a healthy chicken who roams where she pleases. After her good friend, Harold the Duck, died in the Summer of 2009, she became depressed. This was when we knew that we couldn't be satisfied rescuing just one chicken. We needed to rescue as many as we could so they could have their own little community and serve as ambassadors for their species.

What do you mean "environmentally-friendly"?
We try to avoid buzz words and prove our mission through action. So when we say "environmentally-friendly" we mean that we will be using locally-sourced building materials like earthbag, strawbale, and cob. We will also incorporate sustainable feeding structures like vermiculture bins, which will not only help feed the chickens but will also keep waste from humans out of landfills. We will also use passive solar technology for keeping the coop warm in the winter and earthberm walls to keep it cool in the summer.
This project will be built by people like you (maybe even you). We will be hosting work parties throughout the year so that we can all participate in the process of building a sanctuary. Everyone will learn invaluable skills for building with sustainable materials.
A little about Deep Roots Animal Sanctuary
We are Indiana's first comprehensive animal sanctuary and protection organization. We are working to expose and stop animal cruelty through research and investigations, legal and legislative actions, public awareness campaigns, youth education, and direct rescue and refuge efforts. Our sanctuary in Spencer, Indiana provides lifelong care for rescued animals, who serve as ambassadors for at-risk animals everywhere by educating visitors about the realities of animal industries.
